It’s easy to see why The Evil Dead Rise is one of the most anticipated movies of 2023 considering it’s the next chapter in the best horror franchise ever - yes I said fight me with a chainsaw! Evil Dead so influential that even non-horror people can easily recognize this name as a staple in film history that should be respected and praised. However, as the creator of the franchise said Sam Raimi recently found out Evil Dead almost completely different name. Even more surprisingly, the reason has to do with the price of print ads in newspapers.
Raimi’s original name was a tribute to Lovecraft. Necronomicon
While Raimi is now a major Hollywood director who directed his favorite Spiderman trilogy featuring Tobey Maguire and Marvel Studios Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness, in the late 1970s, he simply went bankrupt. So although Raimi wanted to develop a horror film and show it in theaters, he didn’t have the money to do so. That’s why Raimi and his longtime friend and actor Bruce Campbell made a short film called In the forest, which served as a proof of concept for a film they really wanted to make. WITH In the forest As prototypes, Raimi and Campbell began a passionate fundraising campaign for what would become known as Evil Dead.
Until the later stages of production, Raimi was determined to name his film book of the deaddirect allusion to HP Lovecraft, the author of the idea of the Necronomicon. Inspired by Lovecraft’s work, Raimi wanted to explore the idea of an evil book with the ability to resurrect the dead and summon demons, so the movie’s title was pretty much set in stone - until it wasn’t. In a recent interview with Empire, Raimi explained that the final name was chosen by the seller and not Evil Deadcreative team. According to the director:
“The original title of the film was ‘Book of the Dead. But the movie dealer Irwin Shapiro sat rob [producer Robert G. Tapert]Bruce and I went downstairs and said: “Guys, we are changing the name. Newspaper ad space pays by the inch, kid. We won’t have a five-word headline. ‘Dead’ you can stay. One more word is possible. You can call it ‘101% dead’ or ‘Evil Dead.’“
This quirky behind-the-scenes story is a strange relic from a bygone era. Some of the franchise’s younger fans may not have even understood the concept of charging newspaper ads by the inch, which was reason enough to shorten the movie’s title. It’s also strange to realize that someone who had nothing to do with the development of the film could impose such a radical creative change for financial reasons. Luckily, Raimi made the right choice as the movie can’t be titled 101% dead could be taken seriously. As Raimi put it, “101% dead”? I thought, “I’ll die first.” So I chose the lesser of two terrible names. But now I’m starting to like it. It’s pretty good.”
Evil Dead the franchise will rise again from the grave when The Evil Dead Rise called to theaters on April 21st.
