The day after the teasers for their upcoming crime comedy One day like a lion with a bright poster Lionsgate presented the first trailer of the film, which starred Scott Caan, J.K. SimmonsAnd Frank Grillo. The film centers on Jackie Powers of Caan, a cash-strapped father who resorts to becoming an amateur hitman to pay legal fees for his delinquent son on trial. The film is positioned as a witty tribute to Quentin Tarantino And The Coen Brothers which the trailer is quick to tease as it includes a fine blend of drama, comedy and heavy action.
The trailer opens with Powers receiving detailed orders from mobsters as he prepares to take on his first target. The instructions are simple, make the target pay the money he owes the boss by any means, including killing him. However, it immediately becomes apparent that Powers is extremely inexperienced and simply incapable of killing. Not only does he wear a ridiculous mustache in an attempt to hide his identity, but he also gets closer to his goal and unknowingly starts negotiations. Target, Walter Boggs (Simmons), who has been described as a cunning debtor, considers his terms without hesitation, quickly taking the first shot.
Powers’ failed mission puts him in more trouble as he becomes the new target of mob boss Paulie Russo (Grillo). The Boss entrusts the mission to another mobster, Dom Lorenzo, who is also assigned to hunt down Powers, who is now on the run. However, although the mission at the diner did not go as planned, it led Powers to meet a waitress, with whom he teams up to con her wealthy dying mother as they both strike a win-win deal. As the trailer progresses, the plot becomes quite confusing. Action sequences abound as we see a handful of dead bodies as Boggs and Russo face off in a deadly power game. There is also a touch of romance and comedy, and judging by them, One day like a lion seems to tick the right boxes as a tribute to the aforementioned authors.
