Gravitas Ventures has set a release date Shia LaBeoufleading drama Padre Pio for this summer, according to Deadline. The film is based on a real saint. Francesco Forgione directed by filmmaker Abel Ferrara from a script he co-wrote with Maurizio Braucciand last year’s Venice Film Festival premiere drew mixed reviews.
The film is set at the end of the First World War. In the film, young Italian soldiers return to San Giovanni Rotondo, which is considered a land of poverty, historical violence, and the church’s iron rule. Padre Pio (Labeuf) also arrives in the city at a remote Capuchin monastery and begins his ministry, evoking an aura of irresistible charisma, holiness and legendary visions of Jesus, Mary and the Devil himself. On the eve of Italy’s first free elections, the stage is set for a “historical and metaphorical massacre - an apocalyptic event that will change the course of events in the world.”
What to expect from Padre Pio?
“Padre Pio is a film about the spiritual journey of a great saint, paralleling that of Shia LaBeouf, who portrays him,” director Ferrara said in a statement. Viewers are well aware of LaBeouf’s problematic behavior in the past. The actor has a number of allegations of abuse, misdemeanor allegations and complaints of violent behavior with co-stars on set. The actor was supposed to be part of Olivia WildeX Don’t worry dear but was replaced by Harry Styles due to similar issues and controversies flaring up right before the film’s release. With Ferrara’s comments, it will be interesting to see LaBeouf in this new character who has been in rehab and therapy in the past after apologizing to the people he hurt.
Senior director of cinema rentals, Gravitas Ventures, Cameron Moore said of the film: “Padre Pio will become a much-discussed religious biopic in an unforeseen future. Shia LaBeouf puts on a stunning performance under the superb direction of acclaimed director Abel Ferrara. We are excited to show the film to audiences across North America.” How LaBeouf is returning to the big screen after the 2020s Pieces of a woman How the public will react to the film remains to be seen.
