The danger of little white lies is shown in full force in the final trailer for the upcoming A24 drama. You hurt my feelings. Julia Louis-Dreyfus leads the film as Beth, a successful writer who fears her next book will not live up to the expectations of her previous work. Then her peaceful marriage collapses when she hears that her husband Don (Tobias Menzies) really thinks about his book. The trailer shows the day-to-day events in the lives of Beth, Don, their friends, their clients, and their son, and measures how small, seemingly insignificant actions like white lies can send someone into a spiral.
The first half of the frame shows Beth’s insecurities and how her husband can reassure her. Between work on her new book, she lives a seemingly perfect life with Don, who wants to cheer her up and celebrate their anniversary. She still struggles with self-doubt, wondering what can be done to make her next book sell better after her previous one failed. Although others tell her that her previous book deserved better and was only sold because of the glut of the book market, only Don can reassure her that she is not some old, tired voice and that her new book is phenomenal. Recall that, about halfway through, Don confesses to his friend that the book is not the amazing work he was talking about, and Beth loses all confidence in him, casting doubt on all his previous encouragement. Her insane spiral in sickness, sadness and anger is both poignant and comedic as Louis-Dreyfus recalls some of her best performances.
However, Beth isn’t the only one with this problem. Don deals with clients who are finally open about how little he really does to help them and sister Beth (Michaela Watkins) admits she lied to her struggling actor husband Mark (Arian Moayed) when his performance is not up to par. Son of Beth and DonOwen Teague) also struggles as his parents’ marriage declines. All of which points to yet another comedy with very real human experiences from the writer/director. Nicole Holofcener who reunites with Louis-Dreyfus after the 2013 middle age comedy. Enough said.
You hurt my feelings Will start a strong summer for A24
You hurt my feelings is one of three long-awaited projects from A24 appearing on Sundance, due for release later this year. Among this group there are noisy past liveswhich is marked as a favorite among the first films of the year, and Talk to medebut horror film of YouTube stars Danny Philip And Michael Philippu with great potential to continue.
Like those two titles You hurt my feelings won the love of festival goers back in January, earning a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score along with a B+ from its own Collider. Ross Bonime. He particularly praised Holofcener’s screenplay for creating real human explorations from mundane, everyday events, calling it “the type of film that reminds us why Holofcener is one of the best comedy writers today, and that her ability to write films with such little impact can often feel like a huge achievement, as such situations seem honest, humane, and completely sincere.”
You hurt my feelings will be released in theaters on May 26. Watch the trailer below:
