Editor’s Note: Below are spoilers for You Season 4, Part 2.
IN You, Joe Goldberg (ur.Penn Badgley) victims who die miserable deaths when they become obstacles in Joe’s path often end up getting a larger share of the spotlight. But the horror of Joe’s actions doesn’t just affect the dead. Over the course of four seasons, Joe has ruined the lives of too many to achieve his goals and cover up his crimes. Ellie (Jenna Ortega), Dr. Nicky (John Stamos), Nadia (Amy Lee Hickman), Matthew Engler (Scott Speedman), Dawn (Alison Pargeter) are all characters who did not die at the hands of Joe, but lived to a fate worse than death. Some of these people simply became part of the collateral damage as Joe continued to go on a massacre in his usual style. Characters like Nadia are still aware of Joe’s reality, but unfortunately they fail to outsmart Joe’s genius, leading them down a tragic path that doesn’t end in death, but perhaps something worse.
A closer look reveals that Joe’s list of actual victims is longer than anticipated, as he has not only killed, but destroyed the lives of many others in order to achieve his goals. While Joe used deceit to lure some into a trap, he abused the trust placed in him in order to maintain his image, as was the case with Ellie. The worst thing about the existence of these characters in YouX The peace is that they can try to go after Joe to knock him down, but first they must unravel the web of Joe’s credible plans. And, most likely, their attempts will simply fail, even if they try, because no one will believe them.
Misfortune haunts those around Joe Goldberg in the TV series “You”
Death always has a ripple effect on those around Joe. Undoubtedly, Joe’s murders have left many grieving family members and friends traumatized by the sudden and, in most cases, unexpected death of a loved one. However, when it comes to killing people and getting away with it without making a fuss, Joe’s hit count isn’t the best among TV serial killers. Forced by his actions and then coerced into not getting caught, Joe often targets not-so-innocent bystanders to pass on the weight of his crimes. Sometimes these characters end up meeting a fate worse than death just because they ended up in the area where Joe worked.
As Joe tells Nadia in the final confrontation with his former student in Season 4 Episode 8 “The Death of Jonathan Moore”, Nadia may try to prove that Joe was behind the murders of the London elite, including the assassination of a would-be future mayor, but no. one could believe her, since she was already destined to be the killer of “Eat the Rich” Joe, who planted supporting evidence at Nadia’s house.
Luckily, Nadia was able to help save one of Joe’s victims before he framed her as the killer from Eat the Rich. At the end of season 4, it is revealed that Marienne (Tati Gabriel) managed to escape alive thanks to Nadia’s plan. Marienne was already a victim of Joe’s plans and was forced to leave her life in the United States after Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti) revealed Joe’s true identity to her.
In the end, it was good that Marienne was able to live with her daughter Juliet until she realized that Joe had tracked her down. Somehow, Marienne managed to escape Joe’s clutches twice, a rarity on the show. But in spite of everything, Marienne is well aware that there is no way to put Joe Goldberg in a cage - she repeats this to Nadia when she is found locked in a cage by a student of Professor Jonathan Moore in literature. Now that she is lucky enough to be alive, she will remain in fear for the rest of her life, knowing that Joe can find out about her existence at any moment, and it is still impossible to stop him, especially when Joe’s influence has only grown. . It’s no longer “good old Joe” against the world. Now Joe has Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie) and her huge inheritance by his side, which almost makes Joe invincible.
Many other characters have faced a similar and terrible fate thanks to Joe Goldberg. Dr. Nicky was destined for a future similar to Nadia’s when Joe forced Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Leil) write a report in which Dr. Nicky became the despicable owner of the crimes that were actually committed by Joe. Although Dr. Nicky later confessed to Forty Quinn (James Scully) the exploitation of many vulnerable women like Beck, it is debatable whether he deserved to be labeled a murderer. His marriage could end in disaster any day because of his client relationships. But going to jail for crimes he didn’t commit was Joe’s punishment. He has just become the most suitable target to take responsibility for all of Joe’s murders in the first season due to his scandalous connection to Beck.
Joe makes death look merciful in “You”
In Season 2, poor little Ellie became the unfortunate victim of Joe’s crimes only because her older sister didn’t use her reporting skills well enough to dig into the past of her latest tenant, Will Bettelheim. When Love Killed DelilahCarmela Zumbado), Joe accuses the Quinns of hiding their involvement in this whole mess. What’s more, he tries to control the damage by trying to help the nearly 16-year-old by convincing himself that he’s not as bad as Ellie thinks. By the end of season 2, Ellie is not only orphaned and forced to move to a new life somewhere else, but also deceived by Joe, who is directly responsible for Delilah’s death. Although Ellie blames Joe for bringing the Quinns into her and Delilah’s life, she remains unaware that Joe was the one who kidnapped and trapped Delilah.
Matthew Engler, Joe and Love’s unfortunate neighbor in Madre Linda in Season 3, is another character who learned his lesson about Joe the hard way. It was obvious that he would fall into the hands of misery when Joe began an affair with Matthew’s wife, Natalie (Michaela McManus). When Natalie is on the staff, as Joe’s (you know, dead) lovers usually do, Matthew becomes an obvious target in the public eye. He becomes a suspect in his wife’s disappearance and is forced to put on a detective’s hat to investigate his wife’s disappearance, only to realize that his neighbors next door may know more than they let on. Luckily for Matthew, he doesn’t lose his son to Love’s killing instinct thanks to Joe’s instant kindness to a young man trapped by his cunning wife. In any case, Matthew’s family would have remained intact if Joe had never seen Natalie.
IN You In the fourth season, another side character who had been sidelined for most of the season was unfortunate enough to be with Joe in the wrong place at the wrong time. Dawn Lady PhoebeTilly the Guardian) fanatical stalker, just happened to be there when Joe was looking for the perfect candidate to blame for the Eat Rich murders. Like Dr. Nicky earlier and Nadia later, Don also didn’t have the best time due to Joe’s company, no matter how short it was.
Given the recent events of Season 4, these characters may never get the justice they deserve, as Jo now has Kate’s public relations resources at her disposal. However, it is clear that Joe’s actions had a devastating effect on the lives of many of the characters who were unfortunate enough to be around Joe at his worst. For various reasons, these characters end up being puppets in Joe’s hands, as he manages to successfully use them and dispose of them at will.
While characters like Ellie and Nadia managed to live and see another day, most of them met their bottom in such a miserable way that they might have preferred to die any day. The only saving grace is that they still have a chance to get their revenge on Joe if they ever get lucky in a fight against Joe Goldberg.
All episodes You The fourth season is already available on Netflix.
