Unfortunately, in news that is sure to make this new year unhappy for a corner of the internet, Ryan Johnson ruled out the possibility of Benoit Blanc and Kermit the Frog crossing paths despite fan interest in Get the knives crossover with Dolls.
Speaking to Netflix’s Tudum, Johnson revealed that while the campaign may have started as something of a joke, he did consider the idea and even considered reasons why it would work well before coming to the conclusion that the idea would jeopardize too much of what makes any property great and dilutes the end result. “It’s a joke that I thought was pretty brilliant and I ended up really thinking about it seriously. As serious as I am about the murder mystery genre, I am serious about the puppet film genre.”
An idea that went viral on social media might be interesting, but ultimately Johnson decided it wouldn’t work, stating:
“I think these two things have very different rules. You can either have a Benoit Blanc detective that has dolls, but they will feel out of place. Or you can have a puppet movie that has Benoit Blanc in it, but it will be like a puppet movie. I wouldn’t want to compromise with either of them. And I feel that in order to do it well and make it work, you have to make a choice and compromise with one or the other. If I ever make a movie about dolls, I just want to make a great movie about dolls.”
However, in more positive news, Johnson took to Twitter to respond to a fan’s suggestion that Get the knives take a leaf from marvel book Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Edition, and let Benoit Blanc solve his own holiday murder. The idea of a Christmas detective hunting a killer has been a fixture in crime fiction for decades, and Johnson seems to have taken to the idea. tweet “OH SHIT” in response.
Johnson is on the crest of a wave Glass Bow: Mystery of Knives make blockbusters of Netflix numbers for the streamer, since Daniel Craigmystery comedy soared to the top of the Netflix holiday charts Get the knives sits at number 2.
