In an interview with Total Film and GamesRadar, Johnston explained, “Getting the PG-13 happened after the fact, but it was always so close to the PG-13 anyway.” He elaborated, further saying, “It was a mistake not to accept it. So we made the decision to go PG-13 and actually re-shot a couple of things.” Halloween ends and Horror 2Johnston is right on the money with these comments.
Whether a horror movie gets an R rating or not doesn’t necessarily determine its quality, and some of the best horror movies of the last decade actually have a PG-13 rating. Features such as Quiet place, split, Get out, happy death dayand mega-successful insidious all franchises had a “tamer” rating. In addition, most of the films listed were produced by Blumhouse. The production company has become a modern master, able to scare the widest possible audience.
Johnston also added in his interview: “What really encouraged me was that when we re-shot those scenes, they became more impactful. It’s like, “Yes, at certain times you really need to switch off,” but it’s funny to rely so much on sound and suggestion. In this particular case, Johnston thought that the final PG-13 product was better and more intimidating compared to what they had before. shit, that’s even worse.” We were trying to get this PG-13 rating and I was like, “This is a lot worse than what it was before.”
Of the clips released so far, M3GANJohnston and Producer James Wang don’t mess around with horror here. There will be comedy in this movie, but whether it’s a severed ear or a crazy doll threatening its creator, the M3GAN is a truly terrifying threat.
