There are a lot of superhero stories these days. Movies, TV shows, and even video games about superheroes have become extremely common over the past two decades. While superhero stories come in all sorts of genres and styles, the vast majority of them are blockbuster action movies filled to the brim with high-speed chases, head-turning action scenes, and protracted third-act battles. And that’s not even to mention the fact that almost all modern superhero films or shows dedicate part (sometimes most) of their time to showing any next project that the studio has in store.
Even if you like superhero action movies, you might start to burn out a bit from all the interconnected and bombastic adventures of the Avengers, the Justice League and the like. If this describes your current take on superhero stories, you might be interested in a little show called Doom Patrol.
What is Doom Patrol?
Doom PatrolThe first season premiered on DC Universe in early 2019. It was moved to HBO Max in mid-2020 along with Titans, Harley Quinnand Young Judgewhere it continues to air to the present day. It is based on the DC Comics team of the same name, originally created by Arnold Drake, Bob Haneyand Bruno Premiani in the 60s and is heavily influenced by Grant Morrisonbook in the late 80s and 90s.
The show features “loser superheroes” who are neither superheroes nor superheroes living in “Manor Doom” where they can hide from the outside world. Jane (Diane Guerrero) is one of 64 alternate personalities of Kay Challis, each with their own abilities that they use to protect Kay from the outside world. Rita FarrApril Bowlby) was a 1950s Hollywood actress who was exposed to a strange underwater gas while filming a movie that caused her body to stretch and melt when she was under emotional stress. Larry Trainer (voiced by Matt Bomer and pictured in a suit Matthew Zuk) was a fighter pilot in the 60s who came into contact with an alien energy entity during a test flight and must wear special armbands to protect those around him from the radiation he emits. Cliff Steele (voiced by Brendan Fraser and pictured in a suit Riley Shanahan) is a NASCAR driver who would have died in a brutal crash in the 80s if his brain had not been preserved and placed in a robotic body. This eclectic company was brought together by Niles Caulder (Eng.Timothy Dalton), an adventurer and physician who used his expertise to treat members of the Doom Patrol and help them live a mostly comfortable life in his mansion. On the road Vic StoneJovian Wade), a superhero known as Cyborg, who comes to investigate after others have made a scene in the small nearby town of Cloverton.
What is the vibe of Doom Patrol?
Doom Patrol can easily be compared to other offbeat comic book shows like Netflix. Umbrella Academy or CW Legends of Tomorrow. It features a dysfunctional team of characters who are not traditional superheroes and often shy away from that level of responsibility, slowly growing into a tight-knit family unit. It also draws entirely on the absurd and surreal nature of its source material, taking some of the strangest concepts created by the comics and rendering them completely straight while acknowledging the absurdity of it all. Doom Patrol includes imaginary friends brought to life, talking monkey supervillains, sexual ghosts, a group of antagonists who adhere to Dada philosophy, and a gender-sensitive street. The main antagonist of the first season, the formidable Mr. Nobody (Alan Tudyk), is also the show’s narrator.
It doesn’t mean that Doom Patrol a comedy of the absurd. It draws heavily on the innate horror and existential fear that haunts the characters due to their supernatural transformations, often characterized by a loss of bodily autonomy and control over their lives. Any strong emotion Rita feels threatens to turn her into a rolling ball of flesh. Larry and Cliff are both cut off from their world by their own terms: Larry always has a thick layer of protective clothing and bandages between him and everyone else, and Cliff’s robot body has no sense of touch, taste, or smell. Vic mourns the loss of his former life as his cybernetic augmentations separate him from old friends and family, and struggles to live up to his father’s expectations. And Jane struggles to manage the complex relationships between her various alters and help Kaya cope and heal from the initial (and deeply disturbing) trauma that caused them to emerge. Doom Patrol can become very heavy very quickly. He regularly explores the themes of prejudice, abuse, and mental health conditions, even as his characters have to flee an onslaught of monsters in the form of human butts with legs and teeth.
Doom Patrol is very good at what he does
Doom Patrol is not the only superhero medium to deal with complex topics, nor the only one to pit them against the heights of comic book weirdness. But it’s really Indeed good at it. He takes the conventions of modern superhero stories—the looming apocalypse and dangerous supervillains bent on revenge or world domination—and uses them as the backdrop for his characters’ complex interpersonal drama. Its central conflicts are filled with pathos and sympathy for its emotionally stunted, unhappy, and often unkind protagonists. The writing is poignant, emotionally effective, and often hilarious. The performance is superb, not only the impeccable delivery and great chemistry with each other, but the perfect tightrope walk for you to take care of the characters who are so often terrible to themselves and each other. If you like character-driven dramas with a healthy dose of weirdness, Doom Patrol almost certainly a show for you.
There’s another reason why now is the perfect time to jump on Doom Patrol railway carriage. With all the behind-the-scenes drama brought on by the Warner/Discovery merger and DC shuffling after James Gunn and Peter Safran were put in charge, shows how Doom Patrol are in a hopeless situation. So far, there has been no word on whether the show will be renewed for a 5th season. If you think you might like Doom Patrol, now is the time to check it out. More viewers can only increase the show’s chances of being revived. The first half of Season 4 is currently airing in two parts, with the second half coming later in 2023, so you won’t have to wait long for new episodes after you catch up. So go watch!
