2021 animated film Encanto follows the “fantastic and magical” Madrigal family in early 1900s Colombia hiding in an enchanted place called “Encanto” where each member of the family is endowed with unique gifts, including Bruno (John Leguizamo). His magical power, however, had the unfortunate result of causing him to live among rats, who served as telenovela stars to keep him company. Given the film’s chronology, Bruno’s knowledge of the telenovela raises questions from fans, but Encantoco-director, Jared Bushhas a direct response to the alleged plot hole in the animated film.
Although the movie’s soundtrack suggests that “we’re not talking about Bruno,” fans are certainly talking about a clear error in Bruno’s storyline. When Bush started Encanto “Part of questions and answers” to his Twitter account, one user asked the director how Bruno learned about telenovelas, given that the soap genre first appeared on television between the 1930s and 1950s. Bush answered in the clearest and most obvious way: “He can see the future!” Either way, the director’s answer makes sense. This put an end to Bruno’s plot hole debacle that some weren’t expecting, even when the answer was already right in front of them.
While Bruno’s magical abilities allowed him to foresee the wonders of telenovelas even before they debuted, they also made him responsible for just about every accident in his family, including rain on his sister Pepa’s wedding day. Not to mention that his city blamed Bruno for the retreat of his neighbors’ head and the death of a pet fish, which forced poor Bruno to disappear and live apart not only from his family, but from the rest. Besides Bruno and Abuela (Maria Cecilia Botero), the Madrigal family includes Pepa (Carolina Gaitan), Juliet (Angie Cepeda), Dolores (Adassah), Camilo (Renzi Feliz), Antonio (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Louise (Jessica Darrow) and Isabela (Diane Guerrero), all of whom are endowed with unique mystical abilities, all except Mirabelle (Stephanie Beatrice). But despite her difference, she can save his family’s magic from death.
Even in spite of Encanto did poorly at the box office received widespread acclaim when it was released on Disney+ with lovable characters and a melodic soundtrack such as What Else Can I Do?, Surface Pressure, Waiting for a Miracle, and of course, We Don’t Talk About Bruno ”, which secured the animated film a place in popular culture. Encanto won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2022 and was also nominated for Dos Oruguitas for Best Song. In addition, the film’s themes of family conflict, trauma, sibling rivalry, the burdens of being older, and growing up different from the rest contribute to its popularity by touching on some topics that are not often discussed in the family.
Bush led Encanto near Byron Howardwith Bush and Charise Castro Smith scenario. Some of the popular film soundtracks were composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Encanto available for streaming exclusively on Disney+. Check out Bush’s tweet below:
