2023 will be another stellar year for going to the movies. When it comes to animated films and comics in the new year, no film will be as highly anticipated as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The sequel to the critically acclaimed 2018 Oscar-winning film is finally hitting theaters this June, and we’re seeing it in a new image. Shameik MooreMiles Morales faces an unexpected threat.
In a big feature in The Wrap celebrating Sony Pictures Animation’s 20th Anniversary, Sony unveiled a new image for the sequel that features Miles Morales and his rival. Oscar IsaacMiguel O’Hara a.k.a. Spider-Man 2099. Spider-Man 2099 pins Miles against a wall that appears to be in their Spider-Verse’s central node or layer. That’s what we saw in the latest trailer that was released earlier this month, but here we get an up close and personal look at the inner turmoil of the Spider-Verse. Something unknown, most likely related to the film’s new main villain, Blur, pits all of the Spider-Verse against Miles. While this sequel will feature villains like the Blur and the Vulture, it looks like Spider-Man 2099 will be the film’s central antagonist and holds some dark secrets that make the main spider duo question their roles as heroes.
We’ll have to wait to find out what those secrets are, but from all the marketing so far, Through the universes of spiders it seems to be an even bigger and better film than its masterful original. The stakes in this upcoming adventure seem so high, and recently spider versesenior animator teased Avengers: Endgame-a similar scale to both this film and its trilogy, Beyond the Spider-Verse. In The Wrap’s own article, spider versemanufacturers Phil Lord and Chris Miller said, “What we’re doing with this new Spider-Verse movie is breaking assembly lines again. But everyone is excited about it, not just horrified.” They would go on to say that the sequel is “definitely crazier”.
When In spider verse released in 2018, no one expected it to be one of the best animated films ever made, but that’s exactly what it was. It was a breathtaking, emotional coming of age story and a fresh take on the classic Spider-Man origin story. A story that movie lovers know by heart at the moment. Above all, however, his animation style was a work of art. This sequel looks like it will continue that on a much larger scale, and this image alone is breathtaking to say the least.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will be released in theaters June 2, 2023, before spider verse the trilogy ends in 2024 Beyond the Spider-Verse. While we wait to re-enter Spider-Verse, you can view this stunning new showdown image below.
