Reports began to surface that the latest casualty of DC Studios’ epic and chaotic restructuring was a new Batman movie to watch Michael Keaton put on the hood again to become a cloaked crusader. The film’s script was reportedly to be written Christina Hodsonwho also wrote other DC Universe films, including the Harley Quinn-based film. Predator birdscritically acclaimed upon release, Flashand now canceled Bat girl.
Keaton originally portrayed Bruce Wayne/Batman in the 1989 film. Batmansubsequently reprising the role in the 1992 sequel, Batman is back. More intriguing, and perhaps more important, is that Keaton has already starred in the film. Flash which will mark his long-awaited return to the role, but he also filmed scenes for Bat girl. The decision to have Hodson commissioned to write this outside an adaptation would make sense given that she worked with Keaton on both of those films.
After the podcast went live, Humberto Gonzalez from Wrapper not only confirmed Snyder’s report that the film starring Michael Keaton Batman the film was written by Hodson before it was cancelled, but it was actually supposed to be an adaptation Batman of the future. Designed Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and Alan Burnett, Batman of the future is an animated television series that premiered on Kids’ WB in 1999 as part of the DC Animated universe. It took place in a futuristic version of Gotham City, in which Kevin Conroy returning to the role of Bruce Wayne, acting as a mentor to teenager Terry McGinnis (voiced by Will Friedl from Boy meets the world fame), who took on the role of the new Batman.
Snyder speculated what happened to the project in his report, adding, “…[Gunn and Safran] came and said, “Absolutely not,” he said. “I’m sure that was part of the condition for even bringing Keaton back in the first place… ‘You have to develop a solo movie for me.’ But I’m sure they just said, “No. We won’t mess with Batman. Batman is doing great right now, Matt Reeves’ Batman. That, everything else Batman - or the Joker - is gone.”
Given the unpredictable nature of DC and Hollywood in general at the moment, this could end up being a U-turn, but for Bat-fans, the desire outside adaptation took a little longer.
