Book adaptation We were liars heading to Amazon. According to Deadline, the series is being developed for Prime Video. The series is about the wealthy Sinclair family who spend every summer on their private island off the coast of Massachusetts. One summer, Cadance has an incident that she later cannot remember. Two years later, Johnny, Gat, and Mirren work with Cadance to help her remember what really happened to her.
We were liars will be adapted Julie Plec as well as Karina Adley Mackenzie. Plec’s previous work includes co-development of The CW. The Vampire Diariesas well as the creation of spin-offs Originals as well as Heritage. She also co-wrote the series An Academy of vampires, which premiered on Peacock in September. Plec will write the script for the first episode of the series. She will also serve as the series’ producer. Mackenzie’s previous work includes the development of the series Roswell, New Mexicowhich aired on The CW from 2019 to 2022. She will write the second episode of the series and will also serve as an executive producer. Emily Cummins will be the executive producer of the series. The adaptation will be produced by Universal Television.
The book the series is based on was written E. Lockhart and first published in 2014. Lockhart will also serve as an executive producer on the series. Earlier this summer, the book was selected by Plec, her My So-Called Company banner, and Universal Television.
When talking to Collider about An Academy of vampires in October, Plec opened up about her excitement about adapting We were liars. “It’s when my Warner Brothers deal went to Universal that you just get these questions from time to time, ‘What have you always wanted to do?’ question and my answer was An Academy of vampires. It was for real An Academy of vampires as well as We were liarswhich I do too,” she said. “But when someone asks you that question, you don’t miss an opportunity.” Prime Video has now set up a mini-scenario writing room to work on the series.
A potential release date was not announced when We were liars will be available for streaming on Prime Video. Viewers can see Plec’s previous work The Vampire Diaries, which is currently available to stream on HBO Max and Peacock.
