Can greeting harm people with heart disease? Strong emotions can negatively affect the work of the heart, cause a heart attack and pressure surges, says cardiologist, prof. Krzysztof J. Filipiak. The expert suggests how to have fun during the World Cup without harm to your own health.
Joy is not good for the heart. German cardiologists note an increase in heart attacks among men during the World Cup. The phenomenon is confirmed by Polish cardiologists from a clinic in Zabrze. Also in Poland, an increase in the risk of death, myocardial infarction and stroke was found during this period. An increased risk of paroxysmal cardiac arrhythmias and atrial fibrillation has also been reported.
“This is probably the result of strong emotions, blood pressure surges, and the risk is definitely higher in men, who usually experience these emotions more often, explains Professor Krzysztof J. Filipiak in an interview for the Medonet portal.
Why is applause dangerous for a heart attack?
Many people refer to supporting sporting events almost like “playing sports”. However, this is not the correct approach. It happens that while watching a match, when we are accompanied by strong emotions, acute coronary syndrome occurs. Patients with arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, as well as people who smoke, are at particular risk.
“Cardiovascular events occur as a consequence of high blood pressure, and even in such situations, stroke can be expected more often than a heart attack, points out Prof. Philippine.
Don’t drink alcohol when you’re rooting for your team!
Doctors warn that people who drink alcohol increase the risk of a heart attack, which, unfortunately, often happens to fans of watching matches in front of the TV. A heart attack can occur even in relatively young and potentially healthy people. They usually occur late in the evening. There are many factors that increase the risk. These include: high emotions, excess alcohol, gluttony, sedentary lifestyle, stress and fatigue.
Don’t underestimate the signals your body is sending you!
Doctors warn that it is important to quickly respond to the signals that the body sends us. If you feel unwell, you should measure your blood pressure, and if other alarming symptoms appear, seek medical help. Also don’t forget to take your medicine, which is often the case with horny fans. Remember, watching a match should be an entertainment that should evoke positive emotions!
