Alcon Entertainment has announced the release date for the new Garfield movie you will see guardians of the galaxy star Chris Pratt voice a lasagna-loving feline. The upcoming CGI animated film will thankfully not release on Monday, but will premiere in theaters on Friday, February 16, 2024.
While we know Pratt will be voicing Garfield, and we now know the movie is about 18 months away, the movie is still in pre-production. This also means that smaller details related to the film’s plot are still being kept under wraps. Garfield’s upcoming performance was first announced back in 2016 after Alcon Entertainment acquired the rights to the upcoming film from Garfield creator, Jim Davis, who will also serve as an executive producer. It will be the third theatrical film since Garfield’s debut in 1978 to star a lazy cat and the first film based on Garfield property to be released in theaters since 2006 Garfield: Tail of two kittenscontinuation Garfield: The Movie which was released in 2004, both films have seen Bill Murray like the title cat.
The fact that Pratt will play in the film was announced in November last year. This is not Pratt’s only upcoming project in which he will voice the iconic pop culture character. Pratt is also set to voice Mario in Illumination Entertainment’s adaptation of the video game franchise, slated for release early next year. Joining him in the currently announced cast Samuel L. Jacksonwho plays the brand new character Vic, Garfield’s father, with more castings to be announced in the future.
Garfield the film will be directed Mark Dindal (Emperor’s New Groove) which will adapt the script written Finding Nemo writer David Reynolds. The pair have previously worked together on Emperor’s New Groove. DNEG Animation will animate the project. CEO of DNEG Namit Malhotra and president of DNEG Tom Jacob will act as producers of the film along with John Cohen, Stephen P. Wegner, Andrey Kosovas well as Broderick Johnson. Davis joins Bridget McMeel as well as Craig Sost as executive producers of the project. Alcon Entertainment will finance the animated film and Sony Pictures will distribute it worldwide (excluding China).
