What is the history of She-Hulk comics?
She-Hulk’s origin in the MCU may be very different from her comic book counterpart, but we can still get an idea of what the series will entail. This section may contain potential spoilers for She-Hulk series, so if you’re not interested, consider this a spoiler alert.
Made Stan Lee as well as John Buscema, Wild She-Hulk #1 hit comic book stores in February 1980, marking her first appearance. In the 1970s, the Hulk experienced a boom in popularity thanks to The incredible HulkCBS series. At the time, rival company Universal green-lit the spin-off for The six million dollar man titled Bionic woman.
If CBS decides to do a female-led spin-off of the Hulk, Marvel won’t own the rights since they didn’t create She-Hulk. Jennifer Walters was created so that Marvel could own the rights to the female character Hulk. Lee and the rest of Marvel’s writing team wasted no time and managed to create a character that has been a staple of the company ever since.
Jennifer Walters’ dream was to become a successful lawyer. She was on her way to making those dreams come true until she was shot by the underlings of the mob boss she was chasing. Jennifer was on the verge of death, but luckily she received a blood transfusion from her cousin, Dr. Bruce Banner. As everyone knows, Banner’s alter ego is none other than the Incredible Hulk, so by getting his gamma irradiated blood, Jennifer now has her own Hulk form.
At first, Jennifer tried to suppress the Hulk inside of her, as her cousin did years ago, but she learned to control the power and even enjoyed her newfound power. Walters adopted the superhero name She-Hulk, fighting crime by day as a lawyer and by night as an Avenger.
Jennifer tends to be more extroverted than her cousin, which is why she is often in the She-Hulk persona even when she’s not doing heroic work. In the courtroom, on dates, and even in her apartment. This makes her character more light-hearted than the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde drama that Bruce Banner constantly struggles with.
Like most comic book characters, She-Hulk has undergone drastic changes in her powers, design, and origins. During John Byrneiconic Sensational She-Hulk run, he established that the character often broke the fourth wall, a trait that has since been in and out of She-Hulk stories. Judging from the final trailer, these fourth wall breaks will gradually appear in the series as Jennifer acts as our narrator.
