Russian cucumbers in Polish vegetable markets. “It’s a political thing”

Must read

There are practically no products from Russia in stores, and goods from the European Union do not cross the border with Russia. However, as if nothing had happened, vegetables can be bought in Russia. We asked the representative of the stock exchange in Bronisze if this is not an abuse.

Super Express reported a few days ago that vegetables from Russia are sold at the stock exchange in Bronisze near Warsaw (and probably also at other vegetable markets throughout Poland). They are of interest to buyers because they are a few zlotys cheaper than tomatoes from Polish greenhouses or imported from southern Europe.

Russian vegetables in Poland. They are not prohibited

The presence of Russian vegetables may be shocking, as trade with Russia began to fade a year ago. Sanctions were systematically applied to most products - in both directions. For many months it has been impossible to export electronics, spare parts for cars and aircraft, technological solutions to Russia. In particular, the sale of dual-use goods and technologies, that is, those that can be used to strengthen Russia’s military potential, is prohibited.

However, it turns out that the ban does not apply to the sale of Russian vegetables in Poland. We contacted Maciej Kmera from the press office of Warszawskie Rolno-Spożywczy Rynek Hurtowy SA. He admitted that the matter is not new at all, because Russian vegetables are constantly on sale - only now they have begun to be spoken about loudly. Everything is in accordance with the regulations.

- The market management has no right to interfere in the assortment, provided that the vegetables have all the permits, the necessary analyzes and, most importantly, are correctly labeled. Cucumbers from the Russian Federation are sold in accordance with Polish law, Maciej Kmera said.

For this reason, the market leadership does not take any action regarding vegetables from Russia.

We are not legislators. This is the task of the relevant state structures, - our interlocutor said.

Vegetable prices. pepper down

He added that in the coming weeks, Russian cucumbers are likely to disappear from the shelves anyway, because the season of Polish cucumbers begins, and prices for them will be more favorable than those imported from the east.

On this occasion, we asked a representative of the Wholesale Market near Warsaw if there was any encouraging information about prices from sellers. It turns out that the “terrible prices” that hit peppers in February are slowly being released. Until recently, Spanish peppers cost about PLN 20 in wholesale, which is equivalent to PLN 25 in stores.

“Over the past week, prices have “slipped” by 5 zlotys, to 14-15 zlotys,” he said. He added that we cannot expect a repeat of last year’s low prices because producer costs have risen (mainly due to rising energy and fuel costs), but spring will bring the expected declines.
