Although there were fewer accidents on Polish roads during the holidays this year, the high number of casualties and injuries is still shocking. We still drive too fast and too recklessly.
Speeding and non-observance of basic traffic rules are still the main causes of traffic accidents in Poland. In July and August of this year, not only the number of accidents, victims and injuries, but also the statistics of people driving while intoxicated, is frightening.
Holiday 2023 on the roads - fewer accidents
The traffic police summed up the results of the holidays in 2023. Although statistics show that there are fewer accidents and victims on the roads, there is no reason to be satisfied. In the summer of 2023, 4993 accidents were recorded. This is 273 fewer events than for the corresponding holiday period in 2022. It is also another year on Polish roads when the number of accidents is decreasing (4879 in 2022, 5272 in 2021, 5568 in 2020).
Holidays 2023 on the roads - almost half a thousand victims
From the beginning of July to the end of August this year, almost half a thousand people died as a result of accidents - exactly 445. This figure is high, but somewhat lower than in previous vacation periods. Compared to last year’s holidays, progress was only 8 people. In 2022, 408 people died, in 2021 - 485, in 2020 - 488. As a result of road traffic accidents, 5867 people were injured. This is 395 fewer people compared to the same period in 2022.
Holidays 2023 on the roads - drunk drivers are on the rise
Since the beginning of the summer, the police have also carried out enhanced sobriety tests, during which 20,884 drunk drivers were detained. Compared to last year’s vacation period, this number, unfortunately, is 43 more people (20,927).
Police report that in the second half of the summer holidays, checks began near educational institutions for the correct marking of roads leading to schools and kindergartens, as well as warning and security devices. The number of inspections amounted to 14,680, including more than 1,800 applications related to the need to improve infrastructure, most of which have already been implemented.
September is dangerous on the roads
The police also remind that September is characterized by a changeable aura, which should be taken into account by both drivers and pedestrians. Returning after a long break, children and young people often forget about their own safety. The police urge adults to ensure the safety of their children not only at home, at school, but also on the road.
