At the end of 2023, Porsche will unveil a new logo in honor of the brand’s 75th anniversary. From the text, will you find out what the iconic coat of arms symbolizes and what is its history?
Brushed precious metal, a three-dimensional honeycomb structure, an updated animal look and a more subtle golden hue are just some of the many modifications that distinguish the new Porsche Crest. Work on the project lasted three years.
“The 75th anniversary of Porsche sports cars has given us the opportunity to renew our brand in a fundamental way.” says Michael Mauer, Vice President of Style at Porsche. He also added: “We have reimagined historical features and combined them with innovative design elements such as honeycomb and brushed metal. Thus, an aesthetically ambitious arc was created, connecting the history and future of the brand.”
The history of the creation of the Porsche emblem
In March 1951, a competition was announced to create a logo. The prize was 1000 German marks. However, none of the submitted projects matched the Porsche management’s assumptions. The original Porsche Crest was drawn in early 1952 by Franz Xaver Reimspies. A talented designer and draftsman, he probably also designed the Volkswagen logo in 1936. The coat of arms appeared on cars from Stuttgart 4 years after the inscription “Porsche”? At the end of 1952, it first appeared on the steering wheel, and in November 1954 on the front cover handle of the 356 Speedster. Since 1959, he has also adorned the wheel covers of Porsche sports cars.
The Porsche trademark was renewed in 1954, 1963, 1973, 1994 and 2008. All historic badges are available for vintage and new models worldwide as part of the Genuine Porsche Classic range.
What does the Porsche logo symbolize?
The staggering horse in the center of the Porsche crest is a reference to the seal of Stuttgart. The city’s name comes from horse breeding (“Stutengarten”) and is also included in the design of the coat of arms. This is how the sports car manufacturer identifies itself with its “home” in Swabia. The black and red colors, as well as the stylized antlers, are taken from the traditional coat of arms of Württemberg-Hohenzollern?
What has changed in the new Porsche badge?
The upper part of the coat of arms is somewhat expanded, while the lower part is narrowed. The underlined outer contour has become visually wider. There is a new, more subtle golden hue. By the way, the height-to-width ratio of the “Porsche” inscription recessed into the gold surface has been optimized. The distribution of individual fields was also agreed upon, in particular the size of the red and black areas. The modern 3D effect is accentuated by graduated shades of red. The shiny honeycomb pattern, as well as the interior areas and faces of the hexagons, have minimal color variation. A thinner profile of the horns, framed by a shiny contour, rises above the brushed metal surface. The inscription “Stuttgart” is better readable. The horse has also undergone an update - it is shown standing before the start of the race.
Implementation of the new badge on vehicles will begin at the end of 2023. The new badge will be officially unveiled on June 8, 2023 at the 75th anniversary Porsche production show.
