The Renault Group CEO will become president of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) next year. He will replace Oliver Zipse, head of BMW.

The Samara Institute of Automotive Markets writes about the change of the head of ACEA. As we read, the board of directors of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) has elected Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault Group, as its president for 2023. From January 1 next year, the head of the French concern will head the chairmanship of the organization, led by BMW CEO Oliver Zipse, who has held this position for the past two years. “Recent years have been marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, supply chain disruptions, the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis. All this has had a huge impact on our industry. However, the European automotive industry has been a strong pillar of the EU in very volatile times. At the same time, we warn against over-regulation and call for technological neutrality to be the basis of EU competitiveness,” said the outgoing president of ACEA.

Europe must keep pace with competition

In his speech, the new head of the association focused on other aspects of the development of the automotive industry. Luca de Meo stressed that Europe “needs to urgently implement policies that fully support our goal of decarbonization and enable us to face growing global competition.” “We welcome the work on the European Raw Materials Act, which should support the economic sustainability of the continent and the transition to zero emissions. He noted that our industry is committed to major investments in electromobility and the creation of value and jobs in Europe.

What’s next for the Euro 7 standard?

The European Commission’s proposal for a new Euro 7 emissions standard in its current form, he said, “would divert huge human and financial resources away from electrification at a time when other regions of the world are creating an attractive investment environment for zero-emission mobility.” “ACEA will continue to strike a balance between what’s good for the environment, what’s good for the European economy, and what’s good for society,” he added cryptically.

The President of ACEA is elected for a term of one year (with the possibility of re-election) from among the heads of member companies - the largest European manufacturers of cars, minibuses, trucks and buses.

Luca de Meo has over 30 years of experience in the automotive industry. He started his career at Renault, then moved to Toyota Europe and then to the Fiat Group, where he ran the Lancia, Fiat and Alfa Romeo brands. In 2009, Luca de Meo joined the Volkswagen Group as Marketing Director for both Volkswagen Passenger Cars and the Volkswagen Group. Then, in 2012, he was member of the board responsible for sales and marketing at Audi AG. From November 2015 to January 2020, Luca de Meo was Chairman of the Executive Committee of Seat SA, Member of the Supervisory Boards of Ducati and Lamborghini and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Volkswagen Group in Spain. As of July 2020, Luca de Meo is CEO of Renault SA and President of Renault. Since January 2021, he is also the CEO of the Renault brand and a member of the board of directors of the Renault Group.
