On Thursday, February 22, Shakhtar Donetsk, which drew with Marseille in the first match (2:2), played the return match of the 1/16 finals of the Europa League at the Velodrome stadium against the 9-time champion of France, which for three the day before the game I changed the head coach.
Europa League. 1/16 finals. Return match
“Marseille” (France) - “Shakhtar” (Donetsk, Ukraine) - 3:1
“Miner”: Ripper, Hemp, Rakitsky, Matvienko, Azarov (Traore, 85), Stepanenko (Neverton, 84), Bondarenko (Kryskov, 85), Eginaldo, Sudakov, Zubkov (Swede, 84), Sican (Pedrinho, 87).
Goals: Aubameyang (23), Sarr (74), Kondogbia (81) - Sudakov (12, penalty).
The 9th French team was led into the game against the boys of Marino Pusic by a new “helmsman” - 70-year-old ex-coach of the Ivory Coast national team Jean-Louis Gasse.
But the guests from Ukraine were not initially embarrassed by such disturbances in the opponent’s condition, and already in the opening Eguinaldo earned a penalty, and Sudakov struck perfectly from the mark - 0:1.
However, soon the miners’ mistake when leaving the defense led to them coming face to face with Aubameyang’s Ripper, and the famous forward, as in the first match, did not miss – 1:1. By the way, the Gabonese scored his 31st goal in the Europa League and became the top scorer in the history of the tournament (he scored 14 times in an Arsenal shirt, he had another 8 hits for Borussia Dortmund, 7 for Marseille and 2 for for Barcelona).
After the break, Marseille, with incredible support from the stands of the Velodrome, continued to go forward and in the 74th minute found their chance when Senegalese Sarr “shot” the goal of the Ukrainian champion - 2:1. Another African, Kondogbia from the Central African Republic, put an end to the match in the 81st minute - 3:1.
Shakhtar, sadly enough, deservedly stopped playing in European competitions. Although Marseillais 2024 had not won at all before this…
In other matches of the 1/16 finals of the Europa League, the following results were recorded: “Qarabag” (Azerbaijan) - “Braga” (Portugal) - 2:3 in extra time (first match - 4:2); “Rennes” (France) - “Milan” (Italy) - 3:2 (0:3); “Toulouse” (France) - “Benfica” (Portugal) - 0:0 (1:2); Freiburg (Germany) - Lens (France) - 3:2 in extra time (0:0), Roma (Italy) - Feyenoord (Netherlands) - 1:1 (1:1); “Sparta” (Czech Republic) - “Galatasaray” (Turkey) - 4:1 (2:3), “Sporting” (Portugal) - “Young Boys” (Switzerland) - 1:1 (3:1).
Let us remind you that the winners of the play-off matches will join the winners of the Europa League groups in the 1/8 finals - Atalanta (Italy), Bayer Leverkusen (Germany), Brighton (England), West Ham (England), Villarreal . . (Spain), Liverpool (England), Rangers (Scotland) and Slavia (Czech Republic), and the losers were eliminated from the European competition. The draw for the 1/8 final pairs will take place on Friday, February 23 (starts at 13:00).
