The ECHR ordered Ukraine to pay almost 5,000 euros to one of the organizers of the Maidan assault in February 2014

Must read

In Ukraine, the consideration of cases concerning the events on the Maidan in 2014 and the Revolution of Dignity has not yet been completed. In some cases, convictions have been handed down. There are many cases when suspects fled from Ukraine.

This happened with the former head of the Security Service of Ukraine in Kiev, Oleksandr Shchegolev, who not only left the country, but also won a case in the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), Watchers writes.

In Ukraine, he was accused of planning and organizing the assault on the Maidan, an anti-terrorist operation that began on February 18, 2014. Then, in the center of Kyiv, the House of Trade Unions burned down, and among the participants of the Revolution of Dignity were killed and wounded.

In the spring of 2023, the ECHR ruled in favor of Shchegolev, stating a violation of the provisions of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms due to “excessively long detention during pre-trial investigation” and “excessive length of criminal proceedings.”

Consequently, Ukraine must pay Shchegolev 4,750 euros in compensation.

Alexander Shchegolev was first in custody, then under house arrest, which was later replaced by personal obligations. In May 2022, he was put on the international wanted list, and the proceedings were suspended pending the search for the defendant.
