The 2022/2023 PKO Ekstraklasa season has come to an end. Wisla Plock, Lechia Gdansk and Miedz Legnica said goodbye to the Premier League. If in the case of the last of these clubs, the relegation is not surprising, then the relegation of the other two came as a huge shock. In the final match, the fans did not allow the players from Gdansk to finish the match. Now the club will pay for their behavior.
Lechia Gdańsk became one of the three heirs of the PKO Ekstraklasa. The club from the Pomeranian Voivodeship, which until recently participated in the European Cup qualifiers, is saying goodbye to the top league after a season full of setbacks and frequent rotations as a coach. David Badia, the last of the coaches, did not change the team and left the club after a short tenure.
Lechia Gdansk punished for behavior of fans
In the last round of the season, Lechia played away with Piast Gliwice. Until the 80th minute, the result was 1:0 in favor of the guests, which meant that the eliminated player would say goodbye to Ekstraklas on the good side. Suddenly, the match was interrupted by the club’s fans, who threw burning flares onto the field. The match was stopped and waited for the situation to calm down. The match referee even resumed the match, but after a while the fans again made themselves felt by throwing new missiles. This led to an early end to the match.
It was known that Lechia would be penalized despite relegation. A few days later, the League Committee announced that the match against Piast had been ruled a 3-0 loss to the players from Gliwice. In addition, the club from the capital of the Pomeranian Voivodeship received a fine of PLN 100,000 and a 7-month ban on organized groups of fans from traveling to away matches in all competitions.
Lechia Gdansk finished Ekstraklasa in penultimate place
The transition for Piast Gliwice did not change anything in the context of the standings. Aleksandar Vukovic’s team, the opening of the league, finished the season in fifth place (53 points). In turn, Lechia (30 points) was only ahead of Miedz Legnica. Next season, the Gdansk team will compete in the Fortuna 1 League.
