Do not put in the refrigerator: how best to store bread

Must read

Crispy crust, fluffy flesh and seductive aroma: what could be better than taking a bite of fresh bread? When it comes out of the oven, it is usually eaten still warm to the last crumb. What if you still have some bread left? Then you should know how to store the bread so that it stays delicious longer, according to loewenzahn.at.

Place the bread on the cut edge so it doesn’t harden on the open side. He does best at room temperature (18-22°C), but he doesn’t like the refrigerator. A plastic bag is not suitable for storing bread, it will not be able to breathe in polyethylene and will “sweat” - this is the ideal climate for mold. In a cloth bag, the bread does not get moldy, but it dries very quickly. The fabric draws water out of the bread and releases moisture into the surrounding air. So, a fabric bag is good, but not perfect.

This also applies to a paper bag: paper also extracts moisture from bread, and it becomes stale more quickly. Many bags are lined with plastic on the inside, and you may run into the problem that bread gets moldy easily. A decorative wooden box is often considered the perfect place to store baked goods. In fact, here the bread can breathe well, and the risk of mold is low. However, in a wooden box, the bread also tends to dry out as the wood absorbs a lot of the moisture from the dough. On the other hand, the crust stays crisp longer.

By the way, if mold is found on bread, the entire loaf should be disposed of, even if only certain areas are apparently affected. This is because the fungus can spread and eating bread can be unhealthy.

Where is the best place to store? Nutritionists prefer unglazed ceramic or earthenware for storing fresh bread. The open pores absorb excess moisture and release it back into the bread when needed. Because air can circulate, the risk of mold is lower than with plastic. To prevent mold, the bread box should be thoroughly washed once a week - preferably with vinegar water.
