On Tuesday, February 7, UNESCO announced that unique historical monuments and sites in Turkey and Syria were seriously damaged as a result of two powerful earthquakes. It is still difficult for the organization’s experts to fully assess the consequences of a natural disaster. So far, they are recording all the information that comes to them from the affected region, so that when the time comes, they can quickly and effectively provide assistance.
UNESCO headquarters in Paris stressed that it would take several days to form a complete picture. Experts will certainly be sent to the disaster zone, but so far the priority for the organization is to provide assistance to the victims.
Today we can say with confidence that serious damage has been done to the monuments in Aleppo (Syria). Partially destroyed local citadel. The western tower of the old city wall has fallen. Critical cracks appeared in the walls of the National Museum of Aleppo. Other historical buildings in Aleppo and Hama were also damaged.
In Turkey, the fortresses in Diyarbakir and Gaziantep were especially damaged.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said on February 7 that at least 23 million people have been affected by earthquakes in southeastern Turkey and northern Syria. The death toll is growing every hour. It is already about 9,000 people.
Rescue work is hampered by severe weather conditions and the fact that almost all roads in the region have been destroyed.
Recall that the embassy of our country in Turkey found 9 compatriots who were in the earthquake zones.
