Under the terms of the exchange of prisoners of war, five commanders released from captivity, who were on the territory of Azovstal in Mariupol besieged by the Russians, will be under house arrest in Turkey until the end of the war.

We are talking about the commander of the Separate Special Forces Detachment “Azov” Denis ProkopenkoDeputy Commander of the Azov Regiment for Work with Personnel Svyatoslav Palamar, and. about. Commander of the 36th Separate Marine Brigade Sergei Volynskycommander of the commandant’s company, who directly led the defense of “Azovstal” Oleg Khomenko and commander of the 12th operational brigade. Dmitry Vishnevetsky Denis Schlegu.

Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, spoke about this in an interview with DW.

He explained that this is required by the legal procedure for extraction.

“This means that they will be released, but they will be essentially under house arrest, but with good conditions until the end of the war, exactly where Mr. Erdogan proposes. This is the exchange condition. They can only communicate with relatives. They are in the status of extradited persons who will be without the right to return to the battlefield,” Podolyak answered the question about the status of the commanders in Turkey and why they cannot return to Ukraine.

As you know, on September 21, Ukraine returned 215 of its defenders and defenders from Russian captivity, including the commanders of the Azov regiment and 10 foreigners who defended our state with weapons in their hands. This is the largest exchange of prisoners of war since February 24, 2022.

After that, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the five officers who led the defense of Mariupol would be in Turkey under the personal patronage of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan until Ukraine’s victory in the war.

By the way, out of 215 people whom Ukraine released from Russian captivity, 200 defenders were directly exchanged for Viktor Medvedchuk, suspected of treason. At the same time, Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin, said earlier that the Kremlin was not considering the possibility of exchanging Medvedchuk for the defenders of Mariupol, since he is not a military man and has Ukrainian citizenship.
