Scotland is the first in the world to make women’s tampons and pads free

Must read

On Monday, August 15, a law came into force in Scotland requiring public and educational institutions to provide women with tampons and pads free of charge during menstruation. This is the first such nationwide program in the world. The Scottish authorities began preparing for its implementation in 2017. The government has invested more than 27 million pounds (about 32 million euros) in it.

More than a thousand free feminine hygiene products are now open across Scotland. They can be found through a special mobile application PickupMyPeriod.

“Ensuring free access to personal feminine hygiene products is fundamental to maintaining equality and human dignity. It removes financial barriers.”- proudly declared Scottish government social justice secretary Shauna Robison.

Similar programs, according to CNN, are now being implemented in other countries, but so far they apply only to female students. In France, dormitories have been equipped with vending machines with free tampons and pads since last year. In New Zealand, female students can receive these funds for free during their period.

Canada, Australia, India, Kenya, and several US states have reduced taxes on pads and tampons, which has significantly reduced their price.
