Parliament dissolved, Mario Draghi’s resignation accepted: “Putin’s friends” rush to power in Italy

Must read

On Thursday, July 21, a deep political crisis erupted in Italy. First President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella accepted the resignation Prime Minister Mario Draghi. Subsequently, the head of state dissolved the country’s parliament. In an urgent address to the people, Mattarella emphasized that he was forced to do so because of the political situation that had arisen.

According to the constitution, early parliamentary elections must take place within 70 days of the dissolution of the legislature. Italian media claim that the elections will be held on 25 September.

Until that time, the Draghi government will continue to work, but in the absence of a parliament, it will not be able to make any important decisions. First of all, this concerns foreign policy issues. Such paralysis jeopardizes further assistance to Ukraine.

Mario Draghi retired on the second try. Mattarella rejected his first application. The President recommended that the Prime Minister once again hold a vote of confidence in the government in Parliament. Draghi did just that. On Wednesday, July 20, the Parliament supported the Cabinet of Ministers by a majority vote.

However, if earlier only one party (the Five Star Movement), which is part of the ruling coalition, refused to participate in the same vote, now three parties have already boycotted the agenda - Five Stars, Brothers of Italy and the League.

Drag also insisted on obtaining broad support in parliament. Her absence led to him re-asking his resignation.

Why did the coalition fall apart? There are many reasons, but there is one that directly concerns Ukraine. Mario Draghi is a staunch supporter of our country’s support in the war unleashed by Russia. He calls to provide Ukraine with weapons and financial assistance.

Leader of the Five Star Movement former Prime Minister of Italy Giuseppe Conte at first supported such a policy. However, then he changed his position and began to call for negotiations with Moscow. “Five Stars” began to actually sabotage the shipment of weapons to Kyiv. This provoked protests from a number of well-known members of this force. Three weeks ago, the former leader left the party, ex-Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio. He accused Conte and his supporters of sabotaging aid to Ukraine for the sake of ratings.

Di Maio, in an interview with the American publication Politico, warned that Draghi’s resignation could deprive Kyiv of vital military support for him. The former head of the Italian Foreign Ministry accurately foresaw the political paralysis that had come in the country.

The collapse of the coalition and the dissolution of parliament are beneficial to right-wing parties. They have a good chance to regain power in the country. Today, the Brothers of Italy enjoy the greatest popularity among Italian voters. 23.8% of Italians are ready to vote for this party. Its leader is 45 years old George Maloney has been calling for early elections for several days now.

Local media report that in September the rights may form a new coalition, which will include the “Brothers of Italy”, the “League” led by the odious politician Matteo Salvini and party Silvio Berlusconi “Forward, Italy.” Salvini and Berlusconi are known for their more than loyal attitude towards Vladimir Putin.
