Must read

Iga Sviontek lost to Coco Gauff for the first time in her career. The world ranking leader reached the semi-finals of the WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati with a score of 6:7(2), 6:3, 4:6. The opponent of the 19-year-old American in the final of the competition will be the winner of the duel Karolina Muchova - Arina Sobolenko.

Before the clash in Cincinnati, Iga Sviontek and Koko Gauff met each other seven times. The polka is a real nuisance for the 19-year-old American, because each of these fights ended with the victory of the WTA world ranking leader. In 2023 alone, the rackets crossed twice - in the semi-finals of the tournament in Dubai and in the quarter-finals of Roland Garros, and both matches ended with a score of 6:4, 6:2 in favor of Rashinyan. Despite the first victory in his direct matches, the seventh player in the world ranking has yet to recognize the superiority of the ward Tomasz Wiktorowski.

Iga Sviontek was the first to break through

Although Coco Gauff won the first two exchanges on the serve of Igi Sviontek, she failed to break through at the beginning of the meeting. Despite this, the American won her first pitch without any problems. The third game lasted several minutes, as the polka allowed her opponent to score thirty points, but this did not stop her from making the score 2:1. The fourth release of the set was a show of strength for the 19-year-old, who demonstrated, among other things, with an ace of serve and a powerful return, she won a draw.

Iga Sviontek remained consistent and did not let her opponent relax with her applications. She finished the rally with a confident right hand and took the lead again. Gauff started her next serve with a fantastic forehand straight into the line, but that’s the only upside of the game. First, she allowed a double serve, then Rashinyan dominated and was broken. The representative of the hosts took the lead for two break points and took advantage of the moment to make up for lost time by winning back the Pole.

The first set was decided by a tie-break

In the eighth game, Rashinyanka slipped during one of the exchanges, which knocked her out of the rhythm a little. We saw three break points and she didn’t use any of them. Only on the fourth, Sviontek turned out to be better and returned with an advantage of one break. The 19-year-old did not lose faith that she would change the fate of the set, and again managed to lead up to two break points, which she took advantage of, completing the decisive exchange with a beautiful forehand. Iga Sviontek barely defended the young American’s powerful serves, which ended in a set with a score of 5:5.

Koko continued to fight for her share and managed to get another chance to break through. At the moment, the representative of Poland has won two exchanges and after the first state of equilibrium returned to the lead. Iga Sviontek was close to a quick end of the twelfth game and, accordingly, a set, but the American got out of the situation perfectly, having defended two set-balls. Moreover, she brought her into a state of equilibrium, after which she won her application. Everything was decided by a tie-break, which ended in favor of Coco Gauff 7-2.

Iga Sviontek did not give up. Coco Gauff threw a rocket

The situation has not changed at the beginning of the second set. The speeding American took advantage of her gem of service and took the lead. Serving Iga Swiatek, we witnessed the first bagel at the meeting, the author of which was the representative of Poland. The first racket of the world did not allow her opponent to accelerate and after two break points she successfully overcame her. Her serve was also excellent, which she won by zero and already with a score of 3:1. After a fierce fifth installment, Coco Gauff proved that she did not lose concentration and made contact.

In the sixth installment, Iga Sviontek showed two sharp attacks on the net, which somehow knocked her opponent out of the rhythm. This gave her a two-game lead back. The game was gaining momentum, especially for the Polish side, which quickly led to break points, but they did not take advantage of any of them, and in a state of equilibrium made a mistake by missing from the right, and thus Gauff won her serve. The ward of Tomasz Wiktorowski was not going to make it easier for the seventh rocket of the world and perfectly closed her service.

The first move of the ninth game was won by Iga Sviontek due to a fatal mistake by her opponent, who threw her racket in anger. Nervousness was noticeable in her game, which resulted in Iga Sviontek hitting a set ball, which she immediately used to equalize. The last game of the second set ended with the third bagel performed by the best tennis player in the world.

Historic win by Coco Gauff over Iga Swiatek

The third set began with a pass from Rashin and ended quickly in her favor. Coco Gauff remained focused and easily won her serve. The American began to resist, but the Polish woman is professional in getting out of such situations and defended her own statement. And most of the time, both players led game after game, winning their pitches. Only with a score of 3:3 did the 19-year-old athlete bring her to two break points and beat the Pole.

Iga Swiatek knew about her not the best situation. On the transfer, Coco Gauff did a great job with the recovery and brought it to a break point. However, the opponent from the USA didn’t give up and changed the situation, winning the game after three tightrope walks. Party number nine could have ended the match, but Rasinian managed to win her serve. Everything was decided in the next game, and, finally, the American reached the final, defeating Iga Sviontek for the first time in her career.
