Bartosz Zmarzlik is a four-time world champion in the individual competition. He won the title last season, although he missed one Grand Prix event - at Voyens - due to an exclusion due to illegal Kevlar. It showed the extent of the Pole’s dominance in the field of competitors vying for the title of the best speedway in the world. Change sports discipline? “Distant future”
Speedwayekstraliga.pl recently interviewed Zmarzlik and asked, among other things: a question from a fan who was wondering if the Stal Gorzow graduate was going to take part in the Dakar Rally in the near future. This is a path traveled by a certain group of athletes who previously practiced other disciplines.
If Zmarzlik had gone down this route, he would have cited the decision of Adam Malysz, who, after retiring as a ski jumper, briefly became interested in off-road rallying. However, the 28-year-old footballer emphasizes that this is a distant future for him.
– I even tried something in one tenth of this discipline to see what it was like. This opportunity to try it was completely spontaneous. Many people ask this because they tie the end of their racing career in a dozen or so years to the Dakar. I had some kind of imposition - that if this happens, then this. But I think this is in the distant future. “I sometimes have ideas for all sorts of cool, crazy things, but so far I’m not interested in anything other than speedway,” he admitted.
There’s still a lot to be won
It is the desire to break records and add more medals in the most important competitions that keeps Zmarzlik from getting bored with speedway. In the Grand Prix it is difficult to find a competitor who can match his level throughout the entire season, hence the clear dominance of the Pole in recent years.
However, it is obvious that not only the Grand Prix is important to the champion. Zmarzlik can still continue his streak of titles won at the Polish Individual Championships. However, he never won a gold medal at the Speedway of Nations.
