Polish athletics fans have had reason to rejoice over the years. Athletes not only bring pride to our country and celebrate success at major events, but major events are often held on the Vistula River. The next one will take place in Poland in three years.
Polish athletics is at a very good level. The performances of athletes are very popular, and they themselves become popular stars. Year after year, the largest halls and stadiums in Poland attract fans who want to see the competition at the highest level. The next big opportunity will be the World Indoor Championships scheduled for 2026.
A big athletics event is coming to Poland
World Athletics, the world athletics federation, has announced that the 2026 World Athletics Competition will be held in Torun. This is a great honor for Polish sport, as an event of this magnitude is held in Poland only for the second time in history. Henryk Olszewski, President of the Polish Athletics Association, quoted by Przegląd Sportowy Onet, did not hide his satisfaction with the choice, but emphasized the difficulty of organizing such a big competition.
– I received with satisfaction the information about the awarding of another major athletics tournament to Poland. In March 2026, hundreds of players, coaches and fans from all over the world will come to our country again. This is a big organizational task, although I am convinced that Kuyavy and Pomerania will exemplarily cope with their task and organize the best indoor world championships in history at the Torun Arena,” said Olszewski.
The 2026 World Indoor Championships will be held in Torun.
The first World Indoor Championships in Poland took place in Sopot in 2014. The Poles then took sixth place in the general classification, winning six medals (one gold). Toruń also knows what it means to organize high-level competitions. The local arena hosted the 2021 European Indoor Championships, where the white-reds won as many as ten medals (one gold). For many years, the city of Copernicus has been organizing international sports meetings and championships in Poland.
