Will monkeypox return during the holidays? There is a warning from experts

Must read

Officially, smallpox, formerly monkeypox, may be a problem again. This is what American public health experts suggest. What is the situation in Poland?

The monkeypox epidemic was one of the major health problems the world faced in the past year. Could it happen again this year? This is what the Americans assume, fearing the summer months.

The global smallpox epidemic is over, but the threat remains

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced in May that mpox is no longer a global health emergency. “However, as with Covid-19, this does not mean the job is done. Smallpox continues to pose significant public health challenges that require a strong, robust and sustainable response,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Now the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a monkeypox alert, predicting smallpox virus infections could become a problem again this summer. “The spring and summer season of 2023 could lead to a resurgence of smallpox,” the CDC said in a statement. Cause? Holidays are the time when people gather for festivals and other public events. Therefore, experts advise to be vaccinated against monkeypox.

Monkeypox in Poland

According to a current report from the World Health Organization, no new cases of monkeypox have been reported in Poland in the past three weeks. A total of 217 cases of smallpox have been identified in Poland since the beginning of the epidemic. By comparison, neighboring Germany had over 3,600 cases. The first case of monkeypox in Europe last year was recorded in May, in Poland in June 2022.
