March 20th is International Meat Free Day. Its creation was dictated not only by ethical or environmental considerations. The negative impact of pork, beef and other meat products on the human body was also taken into account. Find out who eats the most meat.

Red meat consumed in excess increases the risk of developing cancer (colon, breast, pancreas, and prostate cancer) as well as many other diseases. Therefore, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends limiting its share in the daily diet. However, they do exist. certain groups of people who should avoid meat altogether. Look what we’re talking about.

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA)

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease caused by disorders in the immune system. The body mistakes healthy tissue cells for pathogens and attacks them. It has been proven that compounds found in red meat (including beef) can increase the symptoms of the disease and exacerbate the course of the disease. Patients with RA noted a noticeable improvement in overall well-being after the exclusion of this product from the daily diet.

People with asthma

Eating smoked meats or sausages can aggravate asthma symptoms. This conclusion was made by French scientists. They analyzed data from the EGEA (Epidemiological Study of the Genetics and Environment of Asthma) study. It turned out that eating dried meat led to a deterioration in the well-being of patients with chronic inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract - an increase in the frequency of dyspnea attacks. It should be noted that the harmful influence of nutritional factors on the course of the described disease is not directly related to BMI (which may indicate overweight or obesity).

Patients with multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a progressive neurological disease. Studies conducted by Australian and American scientists have shown that there is a link between the composition of the microbiome and the course of the disease. In turn, meat consumption significantly reduces the number of bacteria living in the intestines, which are responsible, among other things, for stimulating the immune system and regulating immune responses. These changes can lead to exacerbation of neurological symptoms and increased disability in patients with multiple sclerosis.
