WWO, or Highly Sensitive People, feel more, experience more stress, are sensitive to pain, and constantly analyze everything. Can you VVO?
HCAs, or highly sensitive people, make up about 15-30 percent of the population. It’s a lot! It is worth realizing that almost a third of people perceive the world in an ultra-sensitive way. what does it mean?
What is VVO?
WWO (or HSP - Highly Sensitive People) - Highly Sensitive Personality. This is not a trait of character or temperament, although it may seem so at first glance. High sensitivity is due to a different structure of the brain. In people with ACS, the nervous system processes stimuli more strongly and responds more strongly to them. This is why highly sensitive people are more empathetic, more responsive to art, more stressed, and more deeply dreaming. They live “more” - not in a positive sense, but not in a negative one either. Just different.
Being a highly sensitive person is not a disorder. There is no cure or therapy for this (unless you feel the need to sort out your head—like everyone else). He is born with it and lives with it, although life is not easy. However, it becomes easier when we stop looking for what is wrong with us and understand that we are simply hypersensitive.
What is the manifestation of WWO? Characteristics of highly sensitive people
High sensitivity is shown:
-
empathy and strong compassion – WWO people are sensitive to harm, pain and suffering
-
sensitivity to beauty - hypersensitive people feel stimuli more strongly, are sensitive to art, the beauty of nature
-
constantly analyzing everything - WWO constantly scrolls through different situations in their heads, breaking them into simple factors a million times
-
great insight - WWOs are sensitive to details, they see and perceive more than ordinary people
-
incredulity - sensitive people have a small group of friends, are cautious in contacts with others. Once they become friends, they build very strong and lasting relationships because they know how to develop them.
-
soaking up other people’s moods - sensitive people are like a vacuum cleaner sucking other people’s moods out. They quickly take on bad emotions, which then strain them, eat them from the inside, because they cannot throw them away.
-
inability to make decisions quickly – it can take months for a final decision to be made
-
inability to cope with a lot of irritants - a noisy shopping mall, noisy nightclubs, loud open-space corporate offices - places where WWO people feel terrible. Crowds, fuss, noise and excess irritants take away all their vital energy, tire them, even cause physical symptoms (for example, migraines, photophobia)
-
inability to work under time pressure – they prefer to work on a task basis, at their own pace. Chaos, pressure make ’em nervous and make ’em lose
-
a greater need for peace - they feel best at home, more likely to choose an apartment on the outskirts, in a small town or in the countryside than in the center of a big city
-
unwillingness to change - WWO is definitely not about people who change jobs every three months, move from city to city or change their profession abruptly. For each decision, they must mature and analyze it a thousand times
-
unwillingness to be the center of attention - sensitive people do not like to be watched, it causes them tension and stress
-
being more hungry is interesting, but when they are hungry they can’t focus on any activity and may take their frustrations out on other people
Highly sensitive people do not like to be the center of attention, avoid fuss and noisy places, and when they are provoked to respond, they react to it with excitement: redness, rapid heartbeat, dilated pupils. However, not all sensitive people are introverts, some just need more time to adapt to a new situation.
Functioning of the VVO
The modern world bows to features that WWO does not have. People must be mobile, open to new challenges, multi-tasking, they must regularly step out of their comfort zone to overcome their own weaknesses. Sensitive people do not do this, for them it is torture, so their life is not easy.
However, the development of social networks allowed them to realize their hobbies on the Internet. Many sensitive people have blogs, YouTube channels, and create Instagram profiles. And they do it very well, because they are more sensitive to the word and image. It is also undeniable that it is easier for them to start a blog than to join a book discussion club, it is easier for them to write or talk about something than to show their face. And this is great, because it allows them to realize themselves in harmony with their own interior.
FA is not a character or personality trait and cannot be learned or eliminated. A person is born with this, and either he is sensitive to beauty and has a rich inner world, or not.
How to support WWO children?
PAH is genetically determined and is inherited from family members. Hypersensitivity traits can be seen from an early age. Some children have a rich imagination, they experience different situations more strongly, they cannot cope with emotions, they see deep and vivid dreams, they experience stress more. And nothing can be done about it, you just need to support them in every possible way, explaining that they are no worse than other children, and sensitivity is their individual trait that determines their uniqueness.
It is also worth knowing if our child is a WWO in order to properly develop him. A sensitive person will not find himself in team sports, will not want to play basketball or football. Enrolling him in such classes will only cause him additional stress. However, he can perfectly find himself in individual sports, in manual, artistic and musical activities, theater camps. It is worth keeping this in mind when raising the WWO.
High sensitivity is a feature, it can be an advantage. “The brain of WWO people is constantly processing and analyzing”
“The brain of the WWO people is in constant readiness, still processing and analyzing. Instead of being “here and now,” we still think about the past and the future, although we are not always aware of it, says Joanna Kozlowska, a highly sensitive person, author of the blog and book “Girl, act.”
Alexandra Zalevskaya-Stankevich: Why can an unwashed mug or a sweater with reindeer put a person out of balance in WWO?
Joanna Kozlowska: Sometimes we associate a certain thing with a particular situation. Perhaps once during an unpleasant conversation, we drank coffee from this mug. Or when we broke up with our partner, we put on a Christmas sweater. And although several years have passed since that situation, when we look at this thing, everything comes back to us. Because our brain associates the sight of that sweater or cup with discomfort. The brain of WWO people is in constant readiness, still processing and analyzing. I hid some books in my apartment.
Why?
Because I read these books when I was suffering from depression. If I looked at them now, negative memories would come flooding back. To protect myself from them, I simply hid them deep in the closet.
WWO people are often said to be exaggerating, telling themselves problems. I even came across the words “screams”, “panic”, “hysteria”. Do these words annoy you?
Such patches are harmful. No less annoying are the expressions from the other pole, saying that we were “inflicted on the wound.” Many people associate WWO with sensitivity, tenderness, and tearfulness. We are not always like this.
So what does the term “high sensitivity” mean?
The nervous systems of highly sensitive people quickly become overwhelmed because we are more sensitive to certain stimuli, such as a louder sound, a brighter light, or the material the clothing is made of. We also have an analytical mindset. Instead of being “here and now”, we constantly think about the past and the future, although we are not always aware of it. It happens outside of our consciousness.
