The visit of President Zelensky to Italy and his meeting with the Pope may have brought the first results: the authorities of Ukraine and Russia allegedly agreed to the proposal of the Pope to receive special envoys of Francis to discuss a truce.
This is reported by the specialized Vatican portal Il Sismografo, without naming the sources of its information.
The report notes that the head of the Conference of Italian Bishops, Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi, could go to Kyiv, and Archbishop Claudio Gugerotti, prefect of the Decaster for the Eastern Churches, could go to Moscow.
According to the publication, the parties accepted the proposal for the relevant meetings, but “the preparation is extremely difficult, and so far progress has been extremely modest.”
The material Il Sismografo also says that this may be the “peace mission” of the Vatican, which the Pope announced at the end of April on his way from Budapest.
At the same time, President Zelensky, at a meeting with the Pope, said that Ukraine does not need mediators for negotiations.
Recall that during the traditional Easter message Urbi et Orbi (City and Peace), the Pope called on the international community to strive to end conflicts in Ukraine, Syria and other countries.
