- Dustin Guy Defa and Michael Cera have a strong bond and shared love of cinema, which led to their collaboration in adults.
- Defa specifically wrote the part for Cera and designed it with him in mind.
- IN adultsSera plays Eric, who must repair his relationship with his sister to keep their family together.
Dustin Guy Defa wanted to tell a very personal story when I came up with the concept adultsa new comedy in which a broken family tries to heal what they have lost over time. Michael Cera plays Eric in the film, one of the characters directly involved in the conflict. He’ll have to talk honestly with his siblings if he wants them to get along again, but the road to reunion will be harder than he thinks. During an interview with Collider’s Taylor Gatesheld before the SAG-AFTRA strike, Defa explained why he chose Cera for the role:
Yes, I made a movie called Face to face, which starred Michael, and we did not know each other at all when we shot this film. I met him for coffee and the next time I saw him we were on set. But since then we have become very close. He’s a cinephile, I’m a cinephile - we share a love for cinema and we definitely just want to work together.”
Apparently, Michael Cera was part of the project’s creative process from the start, even if he didn’t know it at the time. Ever since Defa started working on the script for adults, he knew what kind of lead star he needed to tell the story he had in mind. The director also stated that he enjoyed Cera’s work so much that he was a direct inspiration for the character he would eventually play in the film: “So I wrote the part especially for him, thought about him and designed and even designed some of them with help him as I walked.”
IN adults, Eric has been away from his family for a long time, but he decides to visit his hometown for a short while. When the trip becomes more nostalgic than he thought, he will stay for a few more days to be close to the brothers and sisters he has not seen for a long time. However, his relationship with Rachel (Hanna Gross) is no longer the same as it was when they were younger, and he must reconnect with her so that their family does not fall apart.
