The benefit of following a franchise based on a long-running comic book series is that you can often skim through the source material to get some idea of what a particular character or storyline means to the entire story. When Miraclesalthough, it seems, knowing the information about the new villain Dar-Benne (Zave Ashton) is of little help: In an interview with Total newsreeldirector Nia DaCosta (Candyman) showed that the character is very different from his comic book counterpart, and this is not limited to gender.
The director stated that while there are similarities in both versions, MiraclesDar-Benn’s story began to change as the script progressed. The comics were indeed an inspiration, and according to the director, Dar-Benn’s worldview is the same on paper and on screen. But other than that, does the villainess look like her original comic book version?
“I would just put it mildly, not really, minus their perspective on the Cree and the position of the Cree in the universe. We were inspired by [comic-book] the period of the two emperors, and in the first versions of the script there was a little more of this story. But as we took over and moved into our own space and into what this story was, a lot of that fell away. But in terms of Kree energy imperialism, it’s similar.”
Miracles‘ Executive producer Mary Livanos also expanded on the differences and told Total Film that the Dar-Benn movie is a “deep cut” from the comics. Livanos also mentioned that they decided to use what the villain represents, which is “a new era of the Kree empire after a disastrous encounter with Captain Marvel in the past.” The producer concluded this by suggesting that Dar-Benn would be the kind of villain whose motives are easy to understand, and it will be pretty easy to understand why she thinks she’s right to do what she does.
