How I Met your mother is a popular sitcom that aired from 2005 to 2014. The show centers on Ted Mosby and his quest for true love as he tells the story to his children through flashbacks. Ted and his close friends navigate life through relationship grief and career upheaval.
His best friend group consists of his best friend Marshall Eriksen, his partner Lily Aldrin, his promiscuous eccentric friend Barney Stinson, and his past love interest Robin Scherbatsky. While each character brought something unique to the show, some characters emerged as clear winners when it came to fan favorites.
6 Lily Aldrin
Lily Aldrin (English)Alyson Hannigan) was introduced as Marshall’s love interest. Despite her strong devotion to her friends, Lily came across as selfish, manipulative, and emotionally childish. Not only did she repeatedly cause problems for her friends, including getting Ted in trouble at work, but she was also intrusive when it came to their personal lives.
One of her worst moments on the show was when she interfered in other people’s lives for years. Ted learns that not only was Lily behind his breakup with many of his love interests, but she deliberately jeopardized his relationship simply because she didn’t approve of it. While she may have her friends’ interests in mind, her misguided manner in dealing with others was problematic.
5 Ted Mosby
Ted MosbyJosh Radnor) was the main character of the show as it revolves around his quest for true love. However, despite the fact that Ted is the main character, he is considered extremely unloved by the fans of the series. Although he is presented as a good guy who wants more than family, he has often treated his love interests with disrespect.
Not only did he constantly choose Robin, his long love interests around him, his demeanor seemed creepy when it came to finding “the one”. Just like the show’s narrator, his unpredictability left fans wondering if he made himself better than he really was. In fact, Neil Patrick Harris confirmed this fan theory by stating that Ted wrote Barney as a womanizer.
4 Robin Scherbatsky
Robin ScherbatskyCobie Smulders) was first introduced as Ted’s love interest, although she eventually became a defining member of the gang’s group of friends. Robin’s character was admired for staying true to her values and desires when it came to her career and independence.
However, her individual character line was often overshadowed, as her presence on the show was primarily defined by her romantic relationships with both Ted and Barney. Her romantic relationship and marriage to Barney Stinson was a controversial storyline given how amazing it was. However, Robin’s character arc had an interesting trajectory as it ended with her fulfilling her dream of a successful career as a news anchor.
3 Barney Stinson
Barney StinsonNeil Patrick Harris) is considered a favorite among fans. Although Barney started out as incredibly flawed because he often mistreated those around him, he grew from a sexist and insensitive playboy to a responsible person and a loving father.
Barney’s character brought a lot to the series, making it more memorable. From his love of costumes to his intricate schemes, his catchphrases or his strong ingrained loyalty to his friends, Barney stood out as a likable character whose company would make everything even more legendary.
2 Marshall Eriksen
Marshall Eriksen (ur.Jason Segel) was first introduced as Ted’s best friend and aspiring lawyer. Throughout the series, Marshall navigates the demands of a career while struggling to stay true to his values and dream of helping the environment.
Although Marshall became increasingly dependent when it came to his friends and family, he was also equally loyal when it came to being around them. Not only was Marshall a genuinely good guy who rooted for the well-being of his loved ones, he was also a hard worker when it came to his career and family.
1 Tracey McConnell
In the final episode of season 8, Ted’s children’s mother is revealed to be Tracey McConnellportrayed by Cristin Milioti. Although Tracy was on the screen for a short time, the 8 seasons of the show, devoted to the discovery of who Ted fell in love with, did not disappoint.
Not only did she perfectly complement Ted’s personality, matching his description of his perfect true love, but her loving and sweet nature stood out as the perfect addition to a group of friends. The show’s ending is arguably one of the most disliked endings given how quickly their happy ending was rewritten to justify Ted’s affection for Robin over the years.
