it wouldn’t be Only murders in the building without… well… murder, but it looks like a character who isn’t Season 3’s main victim could be at serious risk. Charles Hayden Savage True Crime Podcast Trio (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) again trying to solve a complex riddle. This time they must find out who killed the famous actor Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd) is a rude and snooty charlatan who has made many enemies while working on Oliver’s new play, Rattle of Death.
The mystery of Ben’s killer will no doubt be solved by the end of Season 3, but there’s an even bigger mystery at the heart of the plot. Only murders in the buildinglast season. In the second episode of season 3, one of the central characters of the series suffers from serious health problems that set many deadly precedents for the rest of the season - a development so significant that it could mean that Only murders in the building a trio can become a duet.
Oliver Putnam has serious health problems in the third season of the series “Only Murders in the Building”
While they seem like a magnet for death and bad luck, our trio of heroes seem to be doing very well. After he helped put the White Poppy (Adina Verson) and Detective Kreps (Michael Rapaport) behind bars for the murder of Bunny Folger (Jane Hoodishell) at the end of Season 2, the rehabilitated protagonists are finally moving forward in the world. Mabel finally moves on from her emotionally torn past, Charles returns to acting and relationship acting, and Oliver pursues his passion for directing again with a brand new Broadway play.
The production of the play also seems to be in full swing. Not only did the production make world-famous actor Ben Glenroy the show’s main attraction, Putnam also discovered a real rough diamond with Loretta Durkin (Meryl Streep) is a talented but inexperienced actress who never got that big break. The details are arranged, the scene is ready, but then … disaster. Ben collapses on stage during the premiere and immediately raises questions about another potential murder.
These claims initially seem unfounded during Oliver’s ill-timed party during which Ben miraculously shows up at the event to show that he is really No dead. This seeming revival is amazing, but it doesn’t last very long. Before the night was even over, Ben was apparently pushed to his death down an elevator shaft, indicating that whoever poisoned him earlier wanted to finish the job.
Death, restriction and more death is more than enough for Oliver’s show to be closed indefinitely. The eccentric filmmaker can’t get enough rest as this isn’t the first time Oliver has experienced a catastrophic disaster in his life. The first time this happened before he met Charles and Mabel was when he was directing Splash: The Musical, leading to a disaster that left many of the actors injured. It hardly seems like a cosmic coincidence that Ben’s original death took place in the same theater as the original show.
Although he is largely in denial, looking for any excuse to state that his passionate project will still continue, he meets Broadway critic Maxine (Noma Dumezweni) while attending Ben’s funeral. While it’s probably not the best place to discuss a canceled show, Maxine is honest about how she wasn’t a fan of the show at all and would have given it a negative review. This is the final straw for the often optimistic Oliver, who begins to experience some chest discomfort soon after.
Later at his home with Oliver’s son Will (Ryan Broussard) and Dr. Douglas (Harry Sutton Jr.), Oliver learns that he had a minor heart attack and now has a heart murmur. Will is understandably horrified by the development, and Dr. Douglas recommends that Oliver rest and stop directing. Oliver, always an optimist, doesn’t look at this major health crisis as anything special and is already starting to plan his comeback.
Oliver turns ‘Deathrattle’ into a musical (and reluctantly returns to podcasting)
Instead of taking the doctor’s advice and getting some rest, Oliver has a wild idea. He has a vision that the key to getting Rattle of Death back as a successful show is to turn it from a play into a musical. Directing a play is already a challenge, but adding overarching songs and dance routines to this play is a stress that Oliver is sure to must avoid - but won’t - for his health.
When Oliver goes to break the news to Charles and Mabel, he sees that they are already getting ready to start the podcast again. They are both convinced that Ben was killed by someone in or near the production of the play and feel they all need to get to the bottom of this mystery. This is the moment when Oliver seems to really realize that he is in too deep as he gently presses on the heart monitor on his chest.
Oliver still hasn’t told his son the truth about his origins.
If the stress of the lead actor’s death and the collapse of the big-budget show wasn’t enough, Oliver still has some issues to work out with his son, especially as his health deteriorates. The second season finally revealed that Oliver is not Will’s biological father. Turns out Oliver’s wife was having an affair with Teddy Dimas (Nathan Lane), making the minor antagonist Will’s real father. Oliver lied to Will and said that a DNA test determined that he was his real father. While Teddy is reportedly not appearing in Season 3, it’s only a matter of time before that fact becomes known. With a murder mystery brewing, a musical on the horizon, and a new season of their podcast, Oliver has already bitten off more than he can chew. We can only hope that his heart can handle it.
