Editor’s Note: The following are major spoilers for George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood.
- Creation of secondary characters Game of Thrones helped deal with a large number of supporting actors, but this led to pacing and story problems.
- Dragon House will also face the problem of managing numerous secondary characters, in particular the Dragonseeds.
- Combining dragon seeds into composite characters will be difficult due to their importance in the Dragon Dance and their relationships with other main characters. This can break the coherence of the story and miss key plot points.
HBO Game of Thrones before the start of production was a difficult task. George R. R. MartinThe wide saga of the lands of Westeros certainly had its main cast, but also dozens and dozens of secondary characters, many of which were incredibly important to the story and development of the main characters. As a measure to address this issue, showrunners and writers began to pair minor characters with others, mixing and hybridizing the personalities and stories of some of the show’s actors. There was a character Ros (Esme Bianco) in the early seasons of Gendry (Joe Dempsey) had a hybrid history loosely connected to Eadric Storm’s story in the novels, and even Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) has seen her narrative intertwined with her friend Jane Poole in later seasons as well.
While this tactic worked reasonably well for some time, it caused problems as the show went on when it came to pacing, plot, and rationale for what the characters were doing. We all remember how Gendry essentially went missing in the Narrow Sea for quite some time after completing one of Edric Storm’s most important plot points when he escaped Dragonstone. However, HBO Dragon House there is also no shortage of supporting characters. While the show’s first season followed Martin’s canon pretty closely, the pressure will mount in season two when Dance of the Dragons actually kicks off. An influx of characters is expected from fans of Martin’s book Fire and bloodand none of them could be more important than those known as the Dragonseeds.
Who are the dragon seeds in the dragon dance?
The Andals of Westeros in the southern kingdoms have long denounced the right of the first night, according to which a lord or king could lie with his bride after the common people got married. However, when the High Valyrians arrived in Westeros before the horrific Doom of Valyria, they brought many of their customs with them. Compared to many descendants of the Andals and some of the First Men, the Targaryens had little objection to the concept of first night rights. In fact, many common people considered it an honor to let the Lord of Dragonstone take their wife, as the houses of High Valyrian were actually considered superior to ordinary people and closer to the gods. This led to generations of dragonseed, lowborn bastards who possessed some form of Valyrian ancestry from the Targaryen or Velaryon houses.
These children were hardly recognized or legitimized for much of the history of the Targaryen reign on the Iron Throne, and it was eventually outlawed by King Jaehaerys I Targaryen the Conciliator (portrayed by Michael Carter V Dragon Housepilot). This did not stop the Targaryen nobles from sleeping around, and generations of dragonseeds lived through the reign of the Targaryens and even after Robert’s rebellion. However, Dragonseeds became a key part of the Dance of Dragons when the Targaryens were effectively split into two warring factions: the Greens on mainland Westeros and the Blacks on Dragonstone.
During this civil war, Prince Jaqueiris Velarion (Harry Collett) realized that although the Negroes, led by his mother Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) had many dragons at their disposal in the war, they suffered from a shortage of dragon riders. Since the noble Targaryens were paired with a dragon in their youth, Jace decided that one of the options to replenish the ranks required finding dragon seeds. Theoretically, these people could command dragons in battle due to their lineage. It so happened that the prince sent out an offer of wealth and promotion to nobility to any commoner who could tame and master one of the unclaimed dragons on Dragonstone. Many humans came forward, but not all of them were Dragonseeds, and they were burned or consumed by the dragons as a result of what is known as the “Sowing of the Seeds”, although some called it the “Red Sowing” due to the deaths involved.
Dragon Seeds Are Critical to the Dance of the Dragons
However, several individuals have taken the step forward and successfully tamed the free-flying Black Faction dragons. In particular, the seeds known as Hugh Hammer, Ulf the White, Addam Hull, and Nettle managed to tame Vermitor, Sysmoke, and Sheepstealer, respectively. Two additional seeds named Alyn from Hull (confirmed to play in Season 2 Abubakar Salim), and Silver Denis was unable to tame the Targaryen dragons: Alyn survived with burns, and Silver Denis was consumed by a wild dragon known as Cannibal. Despite losing both seed and common people, the Targaryens successfully recruited three more dragonriders and ostensibly improved their chances of winning the upcoming battles. With the help of the muscular Hugh, the strong-willed Addam, and the foul-mouthed but brave Nettles, the Blacks believed they could crush the Greens and return the Iron Throne to Queen Rainier.
Without spoiling too much of what could happen next season Dragon House, things did not go as planned, and Queen Rhaenyra ordered the arrest of Dragonseed and, in particular, the execution of Nettle. But what if HBO decides to make Dragonseeds composite characters? Of course, it couldn’t be that bad, since they’re not the main characters, right? I’m far from judging the writing team Dragon Housebut, as a longtime fan of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy universe, sticking as close to the original Dragonseeds as possible would be the right way to go in order to avoid any future plot issues that might arise.
Merging characters would be a problem in House of the Dragon Season 2
Of course, HBO may decide to compose other characters, like Dragon House continues, but doing so with Dragonseed would be an exceptionally difficult task. This is largely due not only to their importance not only to the Dance of the Dragons, but also to their personal relationship with the Targaryen/Velaryons in general on both sides of the war. This includes the fact that one seed in particular is romantically involved with one of the series’ main characters, and some seeds have also crossed over into the High Valyrian Nobility, where their personalities are critical to the coherence of the Martin canon and the history of the noble houses. .
In addition, specifically bundling certain dragon seeds would also be a mistake, as each of the riders fought decisive battles during the Dance, and some even dared to cross paths with one supposed monarch or another. Each character had their own well-developed personalities and certain ambitions, and all of them could go awry and change the course of the Dance if their entrenched characters and story rhythms were significantly altered.
Moreover, combining multiple seeds will also partially cause problems for the main reason they were called into battle in the first place. If the three seeds don’t become dragonriders, we may miss the opportunity to witness Seasmoke and Silverwing fight in the battle for the Black faction. Vermitor is the only exception, as King Jaehaerys’ elder bronze dragon seems to be confirmed by Season 2 plans regarding Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) approached him and sang to him in Dragon Mountain in the first season. The war-changing actions of the two seeds in particular also led to several subplots for both Greens and Blacks, including murder plots and a loose connection to justify one of the deaths. protagonist during the Dance.
Without all the dragon seeds, history will be missed
Knowing what makes HBO’s fantasy adaptations so popular, plots and love triangles would be terrible to waste. Some Dragonseeds activities even have long-standing rumors associated with them taking place during Game of Thrones‘ News feed, and we all know that fan theories keep the buzz going around any TV show or movie. The specter of betrayal does not leave many Dragon Housethe main characters, and changing the main themes introduced when the Dragonseeds gained status and notoriety may also reduce this. This is not to mention the animosity between the nobility and people considered lowborn, which also significantly affects the Dance of the Dragons and the future of houses Targaryen and Velaryon.
Considering all these factors, Dragon HouseThe writers may want to refrain from moving from caves to composite characters as much as possible. Understandably, depending on the production budget, the studio can afford some creative leeway to save a few dollars in casting or CGI involved in rendering multiple dragons at the same time. However, the budget for Dragon House rather big, and the decision to stick to the established history of the Dance, the characters and everything else will be the right one for both fans of the show and fans of Martin’s novels. Dragonseeds are one of the most memorable and fleshed out contributors to the Dance’s story, and saving on them by combining multiple characters into amalgams is likely to do more harm than good in the long run, especially where character development and alleged plot holes are concerned.
