Editor’s Note: The following are spoilers for Season 3, Volume 1 of The Witcher.
Welcome back in the third season Witcher has undergone many changes. Ciri (Freya Allan) is still on the run and pursued by much of the continent. But now she has two defenders, an imposing witcher, Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) and the powerful mage Yennefer (Anya Chalotra). The two had a complicated history before joining forces to babysit a girl, as shown by their interactions. But Season 3 takes romance to the next level, time and time again, turning it into a full-on relationship. The two have been forced to get over their past, but season 3 episode 5 “The Art of Illusion” makes their relationship stronger than ever before. Witcher only released part of season 3, so there could be more of this pairing ahead, and suffice it to say, we’re looking forward to more.
The Netflix series has been slow to establish a relationship between these two leads, although they have always shared a chemistry. They had a few flings in the first season, but this was followed by a fairly significant fight in the second season. However, since Geralt and Yennefer both take care of and train Ciri, one cannot leave each other to make them work. their problems and finally overcome their differences. “The Art of Illusion” includes Geralt’s declaration of love and a passionate night spent together, giving the shippers a lot of crumbs. This mid-season finale also shows how well these characters work together in their relationships and as allies, as Geralt and Yennefer complement each other’s strengths. Yennefer’s subtle political prowess and Geralt’s mighty strength work together to make what seems impossible. Even while spending a hot evening in Arethusa, they uncover a dangerous plot, proving that the show needs more of their unique and powerful relationship.
The Witcher slowly built Geralt and Yennefer’s relationship
Geralt and Yennefer were connected from the beginning, but they often discuss how their nights ended when one of them left by morning. The thing is, while there was definitely something between them, neither of them admitted it throughout the entire time jump story in Season 1. By the time they meet in the second season, new problems have arisen, namely that Yennefer has lost her powers after using firebending, and the only way she sees them to get them back is to give Ciri to the Immortal Mother. Though Yennefer hesitates and eventually gives it up, Geralt cannot forgive her for even thinking about it. That’s where season 3 picks up their relationship.
This time, it was more than fate that brought them together, as Ciri needs them both. Although at first Geralt stubbornly refuses to talk to Yennefer, they eventually pick up where they left off, with one important difference: this time no one can leave. Geralt and Yennefer confront their story, finally having long overdue discussions - yet Geralt can only say certain words in a letter as he leaves to hunt down their enemy, the fire mage Rience (Sam Wolf) at the end of the first episode. The slow romance made us expect more from these two, and luckily Season 3 isn’t holding back.
Geralt finally confessed his feelings for Yennefer in the third season of The Witcher
By the final episode of the first volume, the couple had come a long way. Geralt attends the Conclave of Mages ball with Yennefer, making it essentially their first public date, and at the event, their relationship continues to develop. Although they have other goals during the party, they dance, kiss, and generally become a couple. So much happens in a few hours, including the (staged) battle for Yennefer between Geralt and her first love, Ystredd (Royce Pierson). Of course, everyone present celebrates the love of Geralt and Yennefer, and fans of this couple are not disappointed. For the first time, Geralt manages to confess his love, which is no easy task for a mostly silent figure. He is surprised by the fact that he has never spoken the words out loud before, proving that he has felt it for a long time, but it is still a big moment for their relationship, culminating in a kiss in front of everyone in the crowded ballroom. .
With a seemingly new understanding, Geralt and Yennefer spend another night, which they expect will only be the beginning of their reconciliation. Unfortunately, this plan doesn’t take into account the dramatic twist at the end, but there’s no shortage of passionate moments scattered throughout. The episode is told in their slow narration about the evening between lovemaking. The interludes show the progress of their relationship, giving fans the rich content they’ve come to expect from Geralt and Yennefer.
The Witcher proves that Geralt and Yennefer balance each other out
Apart from the undeniable chemistry between Geralt and Yennefer, they are just a good team. The Aretuza Ball is not a purely romantic event, as they attend with a plan to expose Stregobor (Lars Mikkelsen) as their anonymous enemy. Where Geralt wants to break in and attack, Yennefer takes a more strategic approach that suits this group better. However, she wouldn’t have been able to pull this off without Geralt’s quick wit and willingness to go along with her plan, and it’s not even the most visible part of their work together.
While discussing the party, they each gather different clues to realize that they were wrong about Stregobor and that the real enemy is the much more cunning Vilgefortz (Mahesh Jadu). The signs are few, but they add up. Few would be able to piece it together, especially when there are so many to distract them, but Geralt and Yennefer are unique. Their strengths complement each other, making them a powerful duo to be reckoned with, and as they continue to work together to protect Ciri, there will be many more opportunities for them to show what they can do. The third season doesn’t disappoint fans of the couple and promises even more when it returns for the final three episodes. Since there are still many threats around, Geralt and Yennefer will have to combine their talents again and hopefully spend even more evenings together.
Witcher Season 3 Volume 1 is currently available on Netflix. The second volume will be released on July 27th.
