Based on the popular graphic novel, Nimon tells the story of the dynamic duo of the titular Nimona and the exiled former knight Ballister Boldheart. Nimona is always looking for an excuse to create mischief and chaos, while Bold Heart is still trying to solve the mystery and clear his name after being accused of killing the queen. Together, the duo embark on a journey back to the kingdom to clear the Bold Heart’s name, leaving a trail of destruction wherever they go.
Combined futuristic and medieval world Nimon filled to the brim with a wide variety of interesting characters, both joyful and full of heart, and those with a dark and bitter soul. Even apart from the main duo of Nimona and Boldheart, there are a number of other important citizens of the kingdom, each with their own important influence on history and mystery.
9 Director
voices Francis ConroyThe Director is the leader of the Elite Knights Institute and becomes the de facto leader of the entire kingdom after the death of Queen Valerina. She is a character fueled and defined by her love of Gloreth’s ideology of keeping the kingdom isolated and safe from the outside world by destroying anything and everyone who threatens the commune.
As the film goes on, the director goes to great lengths to defend his misguided ideology, getting more and more dastardly, from killing the queen for knighting Ballister to trying to kill Ambrosius to silence the truth. Of all the characters in the main cast, she is the only one who does not show any real signs of remorse or positivity, acting as the film’s true ideological villain.
8 Sir Toddeus “Todd” Surblade
Voiced by Beck Bennett, Sir Toddeus “Todd” Surblade is an institute knight who harbors a hostile rivalry with Ballister even before his exile due to his origins in poverty. He relishes the opportunity to defeat Ballister after he was banished from the kingdom, always ready to go into battle with an overconfident demeanor.
Todd is the classic low-intelligence dude archetype, but transported to a medieval future, making for a lot of great comedic moments at his expense. He’s far from a real likable character that audiences root for, but Bennett brings the fraternity copycat to life in the best possible way, making him a comedic delight every time he’s on screen.
7 Gloret
voices Karen Ryan, Gloreth is a legendary and heroic knight who founded the Elite Knight Institute a thousand years ago after defeating the “great black monster” and fencing the kingdom to protect it. Gloreth’s legacy is felt throughout the realm, and her courage and heroism are the driving force that the entire realm strives to be like.
For most of the film, Gloret acts more like an overarching ideology than a real-life character, but in a key flashback sequence, we see her origin played out in real time. We see that as a child, she was originally Nimona’s best friend, but after the adult townspeople got scared and rebelled against Nimona, calling her a monster, Gloreth joins the townspeople and attacks Nimona. The character’s turn against Nimona hits especially hard because the audience can see how good friends they were, but the mafia changed Gloreth in a way that would later change the world forever.
6 Amalzapam Davis and Nate Knight
voices India Moore And RuPaul, Amalzapam Davis and Nate Knight are the kingdom’s news anchors and television presenters who spread the news throughout the kingdom. Even in the darkest moments of turmoil and pain felt throughout the kingdom, the duo are on the air, providing insight into the mindset of the kingdom as a whole.
Even though the concept of leading news in a futuristic medieval world NimonThe movie doesn’t give these characters many standout moments. While the characters are consistent throughout the film and can be seen as representing the evolution of the kingdom’s thoughts on our protagonists, they act more like vessels than anything else.
5 Diego Squire
voices Julio Torres, Diego is the squire of the elite knights, a shy and introverted type who prefers to stay in the background. He soon becomes the main focus of Ballister’s investigation, as he was the one who gave Ballister his self-proclaimed weapon that killed the queen.
As a member of the Elite Knights, Diego is much more cowardly and shy than the noble and honor-based knights, and is much more willing to pass on duties to the nearest person than he can handle them himself. His shy nature and inability to speak indirectly lead to Ballister being exiled from the kingdom, although he has a good heart, the character does not have the strength to do the right thing.
4 Queen Valerina
voices Lorraine Toussaint, Queen Valerina was the queen of the entire kingdom and aspired to usher in a new era in which everyone could rise up and become an honor knight. Her plans to change the kingdom for the better were unfortunately cut short when she was killed during the knighting ceremony of Ballister and Ambrosius.
Although her screen time is relatively short compared to most of the characters, there is an overpowering sense of grace and concern for the entire kingdom and its people from the queen. Even more than just following the ideology set by Gloreth, the choices and decisions made by the queen feel like the decisions of a true leader, seeking to improve the life of the entire kingdom, not hiding.
3 Ambrosius Goldenloin
voices Eugene Li Yang, Ambrosius Goldenloin is a modern-day descendant of Gloreth, as well as a champion knight of the entire institution and lover of Ballister Boldheart. While to the public he is the epitome of Gloreth’s enduring glory and power, he finds it difficult to live up to his ancestral legacy as well as balance it with his own personal desires.
Ambrosius is a multi-faceted character who, throughout the film, overcomes psychological difficulties, he has to track down the lover he still loves for killing the queen, filled with regret and sadness. Ballister acted as the only person he could truly talk to about his feelings and experiences, and while he still loves Ballister, he puts his duty to the entire kingdom ahead of his own love and feelings. In the end, he is constantly looking for a middle ground and hesitates to completely blame Ballister, and eventually becomes a hero in his own right, and not just a hero under Gloreth’s namesake.
2 Ballister Boldheart
voices Riz Ahmed, Ballister Boldheart is a former knight of the Institution who grew from nothing into a respectable knight and the personification of progress and glory from anywhere in the kingdom. His fame as a knight is quickly cut short as he is accused of murdering Queen Valerina during a knighting ceremony, forced to live in a hermitage until he meets the mischievous Nimone, who decides to help him prove his innocence.
Ballister acts as a great, down to earth, and intimate character so that viewers can adjust to the fantasy futuristic medieval world while being a character who found greatness from humble beginnings. Audiences immediately cheer for his return of success and for him to maintain his fame, as we see firsthand that the murder was not his fault. His friendship and bond with Nimona even contributes to his positive namesake, as the two bond and connect in a cordial and honest way, which makes them even more likeable as a result.
1 Nimon
voices Chloe Grace Moretz, Nimona is a titled rampant werewolf who gets involved in Ballister’s life, insisting that she become his assistant in evil deeds against the kingdom. While she was initially frustrated by Ballister’s continued good-natured nature, she still relishes the opportunity to cause havoc in the kingdom in an attempt to clear Ballister’s name and bring the kingdom down.
Nimona is a character that has been unfairly persecuted and belittled by the entire kingdom for over a thousand years, leading directly to her Bugs Bunny-style comedic demeanor and love of chaos. She operates by her own rules and philosophy, in direct contrast to the kingdom’s mindset of honor and glory, and makes for a fun-loving, energetic character who rejoices at every opportunity. While some of her actions can be seen as too mean, her annoyance towards the kingdom as a whole is rightfully justified towards the end, making her antics far more serious in retrospect.
