Unfortunately, many films in development, no matter how promising, sometimes just don’t make it to the big screen. One of these films had it all: the acting skills of the incomparable Willem Dafoe starring, incredible Joan Cusack as female lead and director Jeremiah S. Chechikwho also worked on National Lampoon Christmas Holidays And Gossip. Comedy Thriller arrive alive began filming in 1990, but shortly after filming began, the first signs of trouble appeared. In fact, the film was soon scrapped entirely. So what happened?
‘Coming Alive’ Writers Wrote ‘Scrooge’
Screenwriters Mitch Glaser And Michael O’Donoghue worked as a team on co-authorship arrive alive. Glazer is credited with the episode Saturday night life in 1981, and similarly O’Donoghue also had a case with Saturday night life as head writer and supervising producer for just over ten years. The two have just been met with praise for their film. scrooge in 1988. Given that arrive alive was written by two screenwriters who have been proven to inspire laughter, the film’s opening was good.
The plot of the movie will follow our protagonist Mickey Crews, a Florida detective tasked with investigating the murder of a whale trainer. Crews was to be a sleazy character working at a Miami hotel who is willing to take a nap with former Exotic Danger Joy’s beloved pet just to be closer to her. It would be a fun and exciting ride if Crews were the extremely flawed protagonist. The script team will surely enjoy writing a comedy thriller with the freedom that comes with an unattractive protagonist.
Willem Dafoe impressed with The Last Temptation of Christ
Glazer and O’Donoghue wrote the screenplay for arrive alive with a certain actor in mind for the lead role. They have previously worked with Bill Murray For scroogeso they specifically wrote the part of Mickey Crews for Murray. Unfortunately for the writing duo, Murray liked the script but didn’t feel comfortable filming some of the more violent scenes given that he had just become a father.
Despite Murray not working on the project, production of the film nonetheless continued, replacing Murray with Willem Dafoe, who had just starred in the critically acclaimed film. The Last Temptation of Christ, often considered one of his breakthrough roles. Defoe’s popularity grew, and the studio that developed arrive aliveParamount, invited him to the project to play the seedy Mickey Crews.
Up until this point, Dafoe had mostly played more dramatic roles, so a role in a comedy-thriller would have been a departure from his usual work and given him a chance to showcase even more of his acting range. arrive alive signed Dafoe at the perfect time, hot on the heels of his success from dramatic roles and just before diving into something new. The role of Joy, an exotic dancer-turned-real estate agent, went to Joan Cusack, who recurred on the show. SNL and who just worked on the 1987 film Broadcast news and the 1988 film working girl. arrive alive there were many rising stars on the list as both Broadcast news And working girl were some of Cusack’s first popular roles.
Deadlines for arrive alive seemed perfect in terms of the lead actors, director and producer Art Linsonwho produced Untouchables in 1987 and who will produce Fight club in 1999. Unfortunately, the script and the players involved in the creation arrive alive it just didn’t work out as expected.
Willem Dafoe did not want to act in a farce
The script’s distinct comedic style and protagonist Mickey Crews were perfect for the actor they envisioned, Bill Murray, but not for Willem Dafoe. Glaser and O’Donoghue wrote “Mickey Crews” with a casual feel that did not sit well with Defoe’s flamboyant energy. As a result, studio executives noted that the “comedy” part of this comedy thriller didn’t work out.
Sometimes, before filming starts, you can’t be sure if an actor is right for the role or if he’s wrong. It hasn’t even been three weeks since filming began. arrive alive, Paramount called for changes to the script, specifically adding more slapstick. This script change and the humor built into it did not sit well with Defoe at all and prompted him to abandon the film. Defoe is an extremely talented actor, but farce, in his opinion, simply did not suit his style. A frantic struggle ensued to replace the lead role, but the search ended in failure. The film looked more and more like an over-budgeted disaster prepared by Paramount Pictures. And since there was no suitable replacement for Defoe, Mickey Crews was doomed to never hit the big screen. arrive alive was delayed only a few weeks before filming.
There are many reasons why a promising movie doesn’t hit theaters, but arrive alive got into a particularly nasty rut. The script, although the studio executives found it unfunny, was certainly interesting, and all the people involved in the project were extremely talented and ready to go all out. Despite everything in the movie, the pieces that seemed perfect individually just didn’t fit together or fit together. The film was canceled before it even had a chance to present itself, having lost its star power in Willem Dafoe, and it looked like it would continue the set pattern in a dangerous area of budget overruns if left unchecked. The sad truth is that sometimes even potentially great films like Matthew McConaugheyrecently discontinued football film Dallas Stingjust won’t work.
Unfortunately, none of the footage from those first few weeks is available, but the script can be found in the Background. There is always hope that someone will take on the project in the future, but for now, the resurgence arrive alive unlikely.
