Second season Bear is fast approaching a summer release date, marking the return of broken characters as they try to make their cuisine the best in Chicago. However, there is one character who has had a very difficult journey and one might even wonder why he even bothers to stay in a restaurant at all. In a recent interview with Deadline Ebon Moss-Bachrach explained why Richie, the character he plays on the successful show, decides to stay in his kitchen even if the odds are stacked against him over and over again:
I don’t know. It’s like your grandmother’s saucepan. Soup must be cooked in that pot, you know? Otherwise, the taste will not be the same. At the same time you’re like, what the hell? What’s going on with that big pot? It’s ugly and takes up a lot of space in the kitchen. Richie is in many ways the soul of the restaurant. He is the front. He knows everyone’s name. It’s like a social relationship.
In the acclaimed show, Richie was Michael’s best friend until his tragic death, which marked the beginning of the plot events. After the death of his friend, the restaurant needed someone to be the new head of the kitchen, and much to the annoyance of the team, Michael’s brother turned out to be a very experienced chef. Carmen (Jeremy Allen White) came to make a difference in the kitchen by establishing new cooking methods that went against everything his brother taught the people who worked there. Some of them expressed their feelings, creating tension in the work environment.
On top of that, Richie never felt comfortable with Carmen’s new strategy for the kitchen, often feeling frustrated that he had to do things differently. The character was already suffering from anger issues, and losing his best friend while his business is rapidly changing has only made him feel worse. His process culminated in an outburst he had at the end of the first season when he violently lashed out at a customer of the establishment. Since the man did not die in the attack, Richie was given a lighter sentence than he expected.
