Made Nick Santora, Netflix’s latest action comedy FUBAR (army slang) features Arnold Schwarzenegger in her first starring role in a scripted television series. In the eight-episode series, the 75-year-old actor is seen wearing the boots of a veteran undercover CIA agent on the verge of retirement as he faces a difficult relationship with his daughter Emma (Monica Barbaro) after discovering that she also works for the CIA. The game balances between a fun family drama and a spy thriller. FUBAR finds its protagonists, led by Schwarzenegger’s Luke Brunner, on difficult missions as they set out to stop the leader of a paramilitary organization. The ending, in particular, leaves the irresistible characters in the dark as they face an unexpected situation that will change their lives forever.
Arnold Schwarzenegger is a CIA agent on a mission
Luke Brunner (Schwarzenegger) is about to retire after a long life as a CIA operative when he is pulled into one last mission: stop Boro Polonia (Gabriel Luna), whose father he killed 25 years ago. Under the guise of Finn Hoss, Brunner tries to give Boro the best life has to offer. But despite having everything, Boro decides to follow his father’s legacy. Now taking the reins of his father’s organization, Boro has developed the suitcase bomb, a highly portable weapon of mass destruction.
While Boro is looking for buyers for his dangerous weapon, Luke Brunner visits him in the guise of Finn Hoss, an old friend. However, Brunner experiences the shock of a lifetime when he learns that the agent he needs to extract is his daughter Emma, a CIA operative working for Boro under the name Danielle DeRosa. Luke confronts his longtime friend and cameraman Barry (Milan Carter) about hiding the truth about Emma. A chance encounter also shocks Emma when she learns that her father and Uncle Barry both work for the CIA.
Luke and Emma set off at night to deal with the informant Boro Troy. In the morning, when Boro learns that his man is missing, Boro quickly learns that Finn is behind Troy’s murder. The hunt begins in Boro territory as Luke and Emma are pursued by Boro and his army. Once Luke and Emma are cornered, Barry appears with the other operatives, Ru (Fortune Feimster) and Aldon (Travis Van Winkle) to save the two. While a group of CIA operatives take out Boro’s boys and get hold of the bomb in Boro’s suitcase, Boro manages to escape.
At CIA Headquarters, CIA Regional Director Dot (Barbara Eva Harris) instructs Luke and Emma to find Boro with the support of Barry, Roo, and Aldon. The fact that Dot chooses Luke to lead the team does not sit well with Emma, but reluctantly, Luke and Emma agree to work together. Dot also seeks Tina’s help (Aparna Brielle), a data analyst for the NSA. Knowing that Boro will now be looking for radioactive waste to recreate his bomb, Dot orchestrates a plot by Luke and Emma on a high-speed train carrying radioactive waste under assumed names. Although Luke and Emma were never able to find Boro, they manage to prevent the radioactive material from reaching him.
Boro starts looking for Finn Hoss and Danielle DeRosa
Boro finally reappears when he goes on the hunt for the real identities of Finn Hoss and Danielle DeRosa. On the other hand, Tina tracks down the kidnapping of Dr. Karl Novak (Christian Bako), Moldovan scientist. She deduces that Boro may have been behind the kidnapping, trying to use Dr. Novak to create a replica of his bomb. After some hard running around, Emma receives secret documents from handler Dr. Novak. Although Luke is angry at Emma for unilaterally cutting off communications during the mission, he expresses to Emma that he is proud of her afterward, while Emma feels conflict between her relationship with her fiancé Carter (Jay Baruchel) and her duties as an undercover agent. Dr. Pfeffer (Scott Thompson), a psychologist, Dot instructs to fix the situation between father and daughter, but his efforts are in vain.
On the work front, Dot informs the team that with Dr. Novak at his disposal, Boro will now look for a miniature nuclear reactor (MNR) to make his bomb. They decide to lure Boro out with a Great Dane (Adam Pally), a black market middleman who approached Boro to sell MNR. With Dane’s help, Luke and his team arrange a meeting with Boro. Luke, Emma and Aldon head to the rendezvous point, accompanied by a doppelgänger of a Great Dane. When Boro arrives, he senses something fishy but fails to predict the inevitable. Finally, Luke and Emma get their hands on the notorious Boro Polonia.
While Boro is in captivity, the CIA decides to keep Norm Carlson (Tom Arnold), an interrogation expert, ready to get information from Boro. While Emma supports the use of torture, Luke takes a more peaceful approach to negotiations. Boro demands house arrest on Bora Bora in exchange for information about his buyers who want to get their hands on nuclear explosives. As negotiations with Boro continue, a situation develops at home for Luke and Emma, as Luke’s granddaughters and Emma’s nieces, Romy (Rachel Lynch) was diagnosed with leukemia.
At CIA headquarters, Dot decides to make a deal with Boro, but Emma continues to resist the idea of Boro going free. On Dot’s orders, Luke asks Emma to take a vacation and makes her responsible for handling Kyle’s situation for Romy’s sake. Emma enlists the services of CIA torture expert Norm to get Romy’s father Kyle to agree to a bone marrow donation procedure, which he finally does. Throughout this episode, Emma also grows close to Aldon, constantly conflicted for hurting Carter.
Who is the songbird in FUBAR?
Meanwhile, the situation with Boro spirals out of control as the deal goes wrong and Boro manages to escape Luke and Roo’s grasp along with the suitcase that was originally taken from him. Barry and Tina are chosen to replace the Russian couple in a high-stakes card game where Boro’s bodyguard Cain (David Chinchilla) will be present. Barry and Tina are tasked with hacking into Cain’s phone to gather data on potential Boro buyers. To Barry and Tina’s surprise, Boro also comes to the card game to meet the Russian agent. Although Tina and Barry do not kill Boro, they manage to get the date from Cain’s phone. At the same time, Boro makes a deal with an agent of the SVR, the Russian Intelligence Agency, who offers Boro to reveal the real identities of Finn Hoss and Danielle DeRos in exchange for exclusive rights to purchase all of his weapons. The ONI agent also reveals that they have a mole in the CIA, codenamed “Songbird”.
Luke and Boro meet again
The CIA tracks Boro to a nuclear reactor in Sardovia and arranges for Luke and his team to be smuggled into the country in coffins. On a mission to neutralize Boro and take possession of its nuclear weapons, Luke, Emma, Aldon, and Roo arrive in Sardovia only to be attacked by their contact who was supposed to help them, leaving Aldon wounded and the team stuck to work. your way to Borough on your own. While Ru stays by Aldon’s side, Luke and Emma head to an abandoned nuclear reactor in search of Boro and the nuclear weapons. However, upon meeting Boro, Luke hesitates to pull the trigger as he still sympathizes with the child of the man he killed a long time ago. Luke is distracted when Cain attacks him. During the ensuing struggle, one of the reactors explodes, leaving Kain dead and the entire reactor section in ruins.
The impact of the explosion leaves Luke wondering about the bleak possibility of Emma’s survival. The hours quickly run out and Luke’s search for his daughter ends when he finds her trapped under a metal door with Boro. Emma and Boro work together to ensure Emma gets out safely, but Luke refuses to let Boro go for the safety of his family. As Ru, Aldon, Emma, and Luke reach a safe distance, a massive explosion occurs in the nuclear reactor, confirming Boro’s death.
Luke and Emma finally reconcile
By the end FUBAR, it becomes clear that Luke and Emma were able to put their differences aside after having a near-death experience together. Luke finally begins to believe in Emma’s abilities. But despite Emma’s insistence that Luke keep working, he confirms that it’s time for him to retire. Unfortunately, Luke’s retirement plans are shattered when he learns that Emma Tully’s mother (Fabiana Udenio) decided to marry another man after Luke broke her heart before leaving for Sardovia. Shortly before the wedding, Emma confronts her father for abandoning his relationship with her mother.
With a final push from his daughter, Luke decides to reveal his true feelings to Tully and tell her about his history as a CIA agent. As soon as Tully could hardly believe her ears, the chapel was attacked by armed men. Once Luke and Emma bring down the first wave, who can no longer afford to hide their identities, Boro arrives on the scene with a gun pointed at Tully. He did survive the explosion and two days later was found buried underground by his men. Boro, who knew Emma’s name, noticed her wedding ring during a conversation at the nuclear reactor and cross-referenced Emma’s name to track her down in an engagement announcement left by Carter. When his family is in danger, Luke thinks on his feet and indirectly gets Tully to distract Boro. In a small window of opportunity, widened by Tully’s distraction, Luke and Emma kill Boro, ending his chapter.
‘FUBAR’ Reveals the songbird’s identity in the climax
However, Boro’s second death FUBAR turns out to be more important as Luke and Emma’s identities have been confirmed to have been compromised, a risk the family and the CIA cannot afford. As the group present at the chapel exits, a transport van arranged by Tina from CIA headquarters arrives. To understand the confused members of the group, who still have not recovered from the shock received, Luke lays out the situation in front of his family. As their identities are compromised, they become a potential target for countless criminals and terrorist organizations. As he aptly noted in his last words, the situation for the Brunners had indeed become unrecognizably corrupted.
The return of Boro Polonio after his presumed death is not the only surprise FUBAR holding on to the climax. While the climactic action is taking place in the chapel, Tina speaks to someone in Russian on the phone at CIA headquarters, confirming that Tina was a Russian double agent placed in the CIA by the SVR. This revelation calls into question the involvement of a seemingly innocent character in creating all the obstacles that Luke and his team face throughout the series. In the final moments of their season finale, FUBAR offers an unexpected twist to set up a potential season 2 for Netflix’s latest spy comedy thriller.
