Editor’s note: The following are spoilers for Ted Lasso’s third season.
Apple TV Ted Lasso quickly became the streamer’s most watched show. With a good premise and many unique characters, it’s hard not to fall in love with the series. But sadly, it can’t last forever, and season 3 is all pointing to it being the final installment. Just three seasons isn’t much for a show that has gained fans so quickly, but it’s likely the entire series will get them. With the title characterJason Sudeikis), back home, the series will struggle to move forward. Meanwhile, the series ends with the rest of the characters taking new steps in life, and they all get better thanks to what they’ve learned from Ted. But as their story continues, there is still potential for more.
Many people are not ready to leave this world, and fans are demanding a spin-off. With a large cast, many of the characters were able to run their own show without issue. The problem was to find the right story. The spin-off series will need to be different from the original while still maintaining the enjoyable character that fans have come to expect. Finding the golden mean is not an easy task, but Ted LassoThe Season 3 finale provides a subtle glimpse of how a spin-off could work. Upon completion, the ending includes a montage of what’s next for the characters, giving a glimpse into the future, but two things stand out in particular. These two things work together to make the best case for Ted Lasso spin off.
“Ted Lasso” is not about Ted
During the last season, Trent Krimm (James Lance) follows the team, writes about the experience. He named his book The Lasso Way after Ted’s unique coaching style. The entire team adopted Ted’s ideology, so they became a supportive environment despite early problems with each other. In particular, Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster) and Nate Shelley (Nick Mohammed) have come a long way under Ted’s tutelage. Before leaving, Ted gives Krimm the only note in his book - to change the name because, as he claims, “this is not about me. It never happened.” Instead, Krimm called it the “Richmond Way”. Ted’s insistence that the story isn’t about him implies that Ted Lasso-similar series can exist without a character. Although new head coach Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) will behave differently than Ted, he has learned from the best and can use many of Ted’s tricks, even if he does not share the positive nature of the former coach.
If the show goes on, most likely without Ted Lasso himself. His homecoming seemed permanent, and it should have been. But that leaves a new series in need of a new hook, or at least a new title, like Krimm’s book. Ted’s humble attitude makes it no surprise that he refused to be the focus of the book, but the name change may have a deeper meaning. The change in the title of Krimm’s book could symbolize a new series not about Ted, especially if the new show’s title includes the word “Richmond”. Although Ted is the main character of the series, the most important thing is the influence he has on others, and this continues. This legacy can be carried by anyone who interacted with Ted. But even with that indication, the spin-off needs a strong storyline.
Richmond’s newest venture
Ted Lasso finale gives a little hint of what it might be. In the same montage, Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) and Kili (Juno Temple) seem to be planning a new project for Richmond - a women’s team. The duo work together again as they embark on a new journey for Richmond. This allows Rebecca to find what she’s passionate about and a reason to keep the club from destroying Rupert. She makes a lot of money selling Richmond stock at the end of the series, and this will be a way for her to use it and help Keely grow her business at the same time. Both women have learned leadership style from Ted, and their new project can demonstrate that.
This will be a new direction for the spin-off, but not too far. Ted Lasso was aimed at fixing the team’s toxic culture, but they never had to start from scratch. With talented players, loyal fans, and a well-established legacy, the team only needed to adapt in order to thrive. But building a team, especially in a league that won’t be as popular, is a new challenge that will bring zest to this spin-off. It might deal with a mostly new cast, but there’s a chance that familiar characters will show up. And the participation of Keely and Rebecca made it possible to realize several things that were laid down in the final. Rebecca runs into a mysterious man she met in Amsterdam and is later seen in a meeting with him and his young daughter, but it’s not clear how the relationship plays out. Likewise, Keely may be on her way to reuniting with Roy, but then again, the ending doesn’t go too far. This spin-off will feature both women and could shed some light on how their personal lives are shaping up as they work on their new venture.
How can these things work together in a Ted Lasso spin-off?
While the title of Krimm’s book and the future team of women from Richmond may not be directly related, they point to the same thing: a Richmond-centered future. Both take the focus away from Ted but retain his philosophy. A spin-off about Richmond’s newest team will still be about football, at least as far as Ted Lasso was, but it will be different from the original. As the new team learns to trust each other, it could put Richmond’s newfound ideology to the test. This would provide a different angle for the new show, but still include Ted Lasso feeling that the fans love.
Although nothing has been announced (although Sudeikis does think there are spin-off possibilities), this seems like the most likely option based on the ending. With two beloved characters and a unique twist, the show focusing on Richmond’s newest endeavor will certainly do the trick. And the title of Krimm’s book only reinforces the idea of focusing on Richmond as a whole rather than on an individual character.
