Editor’s Note: The article below contains spoilers for the Legacy series finale. The king is dead. Long live son-in-law. Thanks to Shiv changing his mind at the last minute (Sara Snook) during the deciding vote for the final episode on HBO. successionwhen she realized that Jeremy StrongKendall was not the right person to lead the company, GoJo now owns a media company and GoJo CEO Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgard) crowned the sometimes hapless but ultimately competent and malleable Tom Wambsgun (Matthew Macfadyen) as its American CEO.

Speaking of Narrative Management featurette on the Max streaming service, the show’s creator Jesse Armstrong discussed where Roy’s children, who were crushed in their own way by the whole battle (except the eldest, Connor, who found his own happiness), would be in the future. He visualized their future and people, they don’t sound great.

That’s where the show loses interest in them

“I thought about all their stories,” Armstrong said. “You know, they don’t end. They will continue. But it’s kind of like the show is losing interest in them because they’ve lost what they wanted, which is to be successful - as you know, that was the prize their father held out.”

Roman (Kieran Culkin) first cracked under pressure. The younger, with a sharp tongue and a large mouth, drooped during his father’s eulogy, making himself publicly weak and useless from the point of view of the leader of a public company. He was never a serious person, and Armstrong believes that this was just a distraction for Roman, who will soon return to his life of empty debauchery, unremarkable. “In a reductive and brutal way, Roman ends up right where he started,” he continued. “He’s still that guy. And he could easily be a playboy jerk with slightly obnoxious instincts and some pretty funny jokes. He could have stayed at the bar, being that guy. And I’d say it was sort of a detour in his life.”

As for Siobhan? She still retains power in one form or another. Her unborn child - with Tom - will also one day inherit this position, and she can manipulate things, but it comes at a cost. Her family is now irrevocably split, and she has committed one last betrayal. “Shiv is still in the game, I would say, in a rather horrific, frozen emotionally barren place,” Armstrong said. “But she has such a non-victory, non-defeat. I mean, there will be some movement. There is still a lot to be played in this game, but we will leave it at that. And it seems like it will be difficult for them to develop emotionally given what they have said about each other.”

Which leaves prodigal son Kendall, whom we see last, completely defeated and contemplating his future - and possibly his life - in the episode’s final scene. The realization that he will never become a father will haunt him until the end of his days. “For Kendall, this will never stop being the centerpiece of his life, the centerpiece of his life, the centerpiece of a couple of years of his life,” Armstrong continued. “Maybe he could go ahead and start a company or do something else. But the chances of him achieving the corporate status that his father achieved are very slim. And I think it will mark the rest of his life.”
