From the terrible child of Indian cinema, Anurag Kashyapsinister new film noir is coming out, Kennedy. In anticipation of the premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Kennedy received the first teaser on Thursday. Rahul Bhat plays the protagonist, “an insomniac ex-cop who was thought dead for a long time” who still works nights “searching for redemption”.
The teaser begins with ominous footage of Kennedy stalking the dark corridors and narrow stairways as he asks someone in Hindi voice-over, “Tell me how many people have you killed? Did you have fun?” To a crescendo of classical music in the background, Kennedy stabs someone in the stomach. He has a long mane of unkempt hair and a shaggy beard. The killer cop looks like he’s in a trance as he plunges the knife deeper into the body of his victim.
We then see him throw another person off the balcony as Kashyap gets a famous confession. “From the director Gangs of Wasseypur, UglyAnd Psycho Raman‘ reads bold yellow text on the screen, highlighting the most famous films of his distinguished career. After a few more glimpses of Kennedy killing people - he also uses guns, by the way - we get a taste of the black comedy that Kashyap’s films are known for. “Who are you?” the man asks nervously (and repeatedly) when the headline pops up. The teaser ends with a glamorous woman (Sunny Leon) joins the masked Kennedy in the elevator. She gives him a quick glance, turns around and lets out a squeal of joy.
Bhat had previously worked with Kashyap on contemporary film noir. Uglywhich premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight section of the Cannes Film Festival, as did Kashyap’s most famous film, a two-part gangster epic. Gangs of Wasseypur. His last film was this year’s romantic drama. Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat.
Kashyap was forced to write the script after a real incident
Kennedy was written during lockdown and filmed over 30 nights “on the streets of Mumbai”. The background music was recorded in Prague by the Prague Philharmonic Choir. Kashyap said in the film’s press liner notes that he “lived with the character for a long time”. In his own words:
“I wrote for Sudhir Mishra and he often told me stories about this crazy cop. Then, years later, during lockdown, an incident occurred in Mumbai that sparked an idea. I took the cop from Sudhir Mishra’s stories and put him in this incident, and that’s how Kennedy was born. It’s one of those stories that comes to you and you write relentlessly until it’s fully formed. Then I was lucky to find people who believed in it as much as I did, and it just happened.”
Kennedy also stars Mohit Takalkar, Abhilash Taplyal And Mega Burman. The film will premiere in Cannes on May 24. You can watch the teaser here and follow the news on Collider.
