In case you missed it - and you almost certainly didn’t, if you’ve even taken a look at the Collider over the past couple of days - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 finally here. According to our review from Ross Bonaime, it’s a thrilling, “tearful farewell” to the most badass and sweetest team in the MCU. The question is not whether to watch it, the question is How. look Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in cinemas (and immediately!) - the right move. But getting tickets has become more difficult than before. When it comes to the various advanced sound and screen technologies available at various theaters, there are choices to be made before booking a viewing. Thankfully, the director (and newly minted head of DC’s cinematic efforts) James Gunn discovered at least one option that he believes adds significant depth to any viewing of his Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: ScreenX.
What is ScreenX?
By now, any serious moviegoer is familiar with IMAX, a legacy viewing option that projects specially shot films onto a screen several stories high. Similar to IMAX, films must be formatted for ScreenX during filming or post-production, creating a 270-degree panoramic view that enhances the on-screen visuals and film narrative by extending selected key scenes to the left and right walls of the auditorium. As a result, additional images specially designed by the AFX team are projected onto the walls during action sequences and important stage moments, filling the viewer’s peripheral vision and drawing them deeper into the story.
Why James Gunn loves ScreenX
It cannot be hidden that the Gann trajectory in the industry is rare and varied. He started by making grotesque and funny little films for New York’s favorite willful hack purveyor Troma Entertainment. Tromeo and Juliet which is what he wrote. From there, he created an odd parody of an R-rated superhero. Special offers, remake Dawn of the Deadand live action scooby doo films before one or two of his brilliant films as a director, slide And Super. This was followed by the big MCU game of 2014, guardians of the galaxyand a high-profile career, including two blockbuster sequels and DC’s visceral projects for big and small screens like HBO Max’s Peacemaker.
Gunn’s boundless cinephilia and love for big, fun, wild cinematic experiences fueled it all. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that ScreenX is right in his lane and would like people to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in such a spectacular format. While the Guardians final adventure used this format, this isn’t the first time the MCU has used ScreenX. Starting from 2018 Black Panther, nine other films in the franchise have benefited from it. Non-Marvel hits like Top Shooter: Maverick, Avatar: Path of Water, And Batman took advantage of their depth and influence. The way these carefully constructed cinematic experiences came to be in Screen X may have prompted Gunn to try it out for his big hit in the final Marvel movie.
In the interview, Gunn touts ScreenX as “the future of cinema”, praising its format and style for its immersive film viewing experience. “I think it’s great to have something that really surrounds you for real,” he says, adding that the evolution of other theatrical technologies and their new format is a logical next step. “We were surrounded by sounds in cinemas, we heard them from different sides, so why not expand what we see on the screen? Let us feel that we are really in this environment and immerse ourselves completely in it. this screen?
“What excites me the most about ScreenX is the variety of our sets and big stages,” he adds. “We have some great set designs from Beth Nickel, like when you walk into the Orgoscope, which is a giant moon that has grown out of organic matter. astronaut spacesuits. I think ScreenX is perfect for that.”
