The same week that Prime Video revealed the trailer for their upcoming Indian crime drama. DahadNetflix unveiled a trailer for a completely different police story - Cathal: Jackfruit Mysterynew hindi comedy starring Sanya Malhotra as a police officer tasked with finding two missing jackfruits. “Katal” means “jackfruit” in Hindi, which makes the situation “tea tea”.
When two prized jackfruits are stolen from a local politician’s orchard, a “young, serious and ambitious cop” must get to the bottom of the mystery. As absurd as it sounds, the film isn’t just filled with a satirical tone. The protagonist acknowledges the absurdity when she remarks, “This case is hardly real. Soon people will start reporting missing carrots and turnips.”
Subsequently, the local media gets involved, and soon the politician played by Vijay Raazsits down for an interview. “If a politician’s house can be robbed, how safe is the general public?” he is asking. Under pressure to solve the case, the police chief tells Malhotra’s character that she will have all the resources at her disposal. “If you need more men, guns and ammo, just ask for it,” he says, while she has the bright idea of just buying two jackfruits from the grocer and passing them on with her fingers crossed. But you can’t fool a politician’s family. They immediately realize that the set of jackfruits presented by the cops does not include those that were stolen from them.
A satire on the media, political corruption, and perhaps even blind faith (judging by the lyrics of the song playing in the background), cathal has the potential to be a rather welcome diversion from the usual Bollywood hacks that hit theaters and air every week.
Malhotra is a promising young star
This is Malhotra’s third film on Netflix starring. She previously starred in black comedy. Puggleiteand then in a romantic drama Meenakshi Sandereshwar. She broke into a successful sports drama Dangal in 2016, and also acted as a director Vishal Bhardwajpolitical satire Patajaand in the director Ritesh BatraX Photo. It’s worth noting that Malhotra is quickly making a name for herself by starring in non-traditional films that few Bollywood actors her age usually associate themselves with.
