Meanwhile, Fischer had previously worked with Kaling on Project Mindy and was co-executive producer and writer for Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
In a 2020 one-on-one phone interview with Collider, Kaling revealed how Never I never therefore, and as a personal show for her.
“Well, the origin of this story is very personal, in many ways, but the way it turned into a series is quite unexpected, which is that Netflix reached out to me. They read both of my books and they liked the passages where I talked about my teenage and teenage years. And it’s not really a big part of either of my books, but it wasn’t shown on TV and Netflix thought it would be a great home for it and they wanted to do it first. It came from them. I mainly wrote about single women in their 30s, single moms and people trying to fall in love with a 32 year old in another country. So, I wasn’t going to turn down this opportunity, and I thought it would be great to write the script. There hasn’t been a show like this yet, but it really came from them.”
